Something worth noting is that it is commonly thought that there is a 10 to 1 difference in productivity between the best and worst software developers.

If you are closer to the 1 than the 10, then your job is at greater risk of being cheaply outsourced (the offshore outsourcing companies in (e.g.) India are not generally staffed with IIT graduates; the IIT graduates and other top talent are likely doing something more interesting, such as going to graduate school in the US and then getting an interesting highly paid job in the US). The same can apply if you are in a group or division that is overall closer to the 1 than the 10.

Here you go. A translation for algorithm so everybody is on the same page.

@ucbalumnus, oh I’m a 10 or near it. That’s probably the major part of how I’ve survived this long. (And back in the old days, I thought the productivity range was said to be about 30 to 1. Possibly modern tools have shrunk this?)

I agree with you that simply replacing a team of near 10s with an outsourcing contract to India will tend to blow up in management’s face. It’s not a cost savings when the team size has to greatly increase to get the work done. I’ve seen this happen, more than once. The latest efforts at moving jobs overseas are getting more sophisticated, however.

annasdad,
"What was that about credibility? " - No credibility, just simpleton Computer Programmer for about 30 years now and still enjoying it. I never claimed to be any Scientist, I used to be an EE, but I never liked it.
As I have no credibility, I am just sorry for having been giving advice to anybody inquiring about CS. I just know that Computer Programming is a very exciting job, I do not know anything about Computer Science jobs, I have not seen advertisement for one as many as I have seen while looking for my 9 jobs and going thru numerous interviews in my 30 years of writing computer programs. My guess is that they do not exist in my region. Maybe on coasts.

Can anybody help with an algorithm for exiting the infinite loop that this thread has become?

Do While Not boring repetitive gibberish?

Click on the X at the right hand top of your page. ;)

^^^
Really? That will end the thread? I never knew it was that easy. I thought that just meant I couldn’t see the wasted storage space.

So if I turn off my computer then there’s no more internet? Wow, I have a lot of power.

Don’t be silly. A great number of electrons will still be inconvenienced. You just won’t know about it.

^^^
You must work in tech support.

Either that, or you’re a political spokesperson.

Or maybe a doctor. How does it go -
Patient - “Doctor, it hurts when I do this.”
Doctor - “Okay, stop doing that.”

At any rate, I fear I’ve wasted enough space here myself, so I’ll take your advice.

Yeah, almost as pointless and as endless as the countless “my alma mater is better than your alma mater” threads – or the “my alma mater deserves a higher USNWR ranking than it’s got” threads – but not quite.
