@2018dad, I said 50-100% too high, not equal. My understanding is that H will give some aid to 200k income family. Anyway, the numbers matter less than that the top 1% in income is not all that high, really, compared to the really wealthy.

Somebody who makes $50K a year but gets to send their kids to Harvard for free is rich.

No!

I wouldn’t trade. I don’t think too many posters would trade positions with somebody who makes $50,000 a year even if he got to send a kid to Harvard for free. ;)

wait - is it guaranteed our kid gets in? to Harvard?

That might create a interesting dilemma for some.

Then you are even richer!

No trading here either. Am happy that our kiddos were able to attend the Us they did and graduate without debt. It has given them a lot of options and we are all grateful. I feel “rich” in having loving kids & parents and sometimes sibs. Some days the sibs do make me crazy tho!

There’s no way in hell I would trade my current life to have lived on $50,000 for the last 20 years just so I could “send my kid to Harvard for free,” even if it came with a golden ticket guarantee. And the 1%ers who are whining about how very hard it is to live in desirable areas, send junior to tennis camp, AND shop at Whole Foods wouldn’t either. Because they don’t WANT to save and live below their means (like those animals who make $100,000!) which is why they are whining in the first place,

It’s about as stupid as suggesting I’d prefer to come down with a disease that left me in a wheelchair, because then I’d get those nice close parking spots at the mall and I’d get to board planes first.

sorghum, if you had actually lived this life–supporting a family on $50K–you wouldn’t say this. How ridiculous.

Folks like Sorghum just make parking the 1964 F100 so much more fun next to the SL class folks who were sending their kids to private school to mix with " their" kind of people.

Most people were very cognizant of the effort it took to excel in that environment without the typical socioeconomic background, but sadly the ones who acted like we had cooties, never did open their minds.

So I admit, it was a guilty pleasure subtracting our tuition from what they were paying.

Why does this all sound like a very warped competition?

^Because it is? I am genuinely interested in why rich people, $200K-500K/yr group, don’t feel rich. The thread keeps getting sidetracked for some reason.

The 200K guy isn’t allowed to complain because someone in Zambia doesn’t even have one car. Well, exactly the same applies for 50K - you are rich compared to a lot of other people in the world.

Seems silly to compare ourselves to each other. I make more than person A but less than person B. .As long as I live within my means, how does it help me to be jealous of what others have?

A lot of people think you are rich to have vehicle like that…

Sorghum, where did I ever say I wasn’t wealthy? ( the described incident was over two decades ago)
I’ve repeatedly stressed that access to currency is not how I measure either happiness or satisfaction.

Because every CC conversation about money has to turn into a competition. (I think it’s in the TOS.)

Somebody told me, don’t know how exactly accurate, that in China in the old days you were rich if you had a bicycle, a radio, a sewing machine, and a wristwatch. These days to be rich, you need a BMW, a city apartment, a country house, and a mistress.

And Harold Hamm’s wife, getting a billion dollars in their divorce, wants more? Good grief. Money, money, money

She is getting around a million a month. I could live on that.

<a href=“Billionaire Oilman Harold Hamm To Pay $1 Billion In Divorce”>http://www.forbes.com/sites/christopherhelman/2014/11/10/billionaire-oilman-harold-hamm-will-pay-1-billion-in-divorce-settlement/

The number of people on CC who “care what the neighbors think” is amazing to me. We mock the kid from the ghetto who “has” to have the latest $200 sneakers he can’t possibly afford – what’s that driven by? The need to impress others. How is that different from the person who makes, say, $350,000 and has to live at that level because he can’t possibly live in a suburb that isn’t “the” suburb, drive a modest car for 10 years, live as though he makes $250,000 instead of $350,000?

Could we stop with the “the 200k isn’t allowed to complain”? No one is passing legislation here. We can all complain about what we want to, and we can all validate or roll our eyes at others’ complaints as we see fit. I can simultaneously complain that they put 2% milk in my latte when I asked for skim, AND recognize that I’m still ahead of the game.
