My scale tells me that I’m definitely XL.

slightly tangential - I’m convinced that regular twin sheets meant for deep mattresses will work on the dorms XL twins with thin mattresses. And I know that regular twin comforters will work. But what about things like egg-crates (I know, fire hazard), and thick mattress pads? Will the 4" difference make a noticeable drop-off?

Texas - I used a featherbed and normal twin sheets - a tight fit. An eggcrate was fine with the normal sheets. Yes, they do fit - because the mattress is so thin and narrow.

Weeks before I graduated from college I took a career placement exam, good timing hunh. Though it showed many possible career options, one of which I had actually found by myself, it also showed military supply officer as an option. I have used this aptitiude to its fullest in vacation planning and preparing to send my kids off to college. I cna’t help it, I’m in denial, its my last chance to mom them. S went off with everything possible, family kept reminding me that they had water in Iowa and I didn’t need to send bottles of the stuff. I did send a year’s supply of soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, laundry detergent and a significant reference library. Due to S’s influence D will not allow me to send some of my excesses, though she is far more willing to let me spend money that otherwise whe would have to spend later. But I will persist, since her dorm doesn’t have a real kitchen, as S did, I plan to stock up on Microwaveable brownies, mac and cheese, popcorn etc. Afterall we all know there is no food in Ohio.

SRMom3 - Is your D getting a microwave for her Kenyon dorm room? My D and her future roommate decided to get a fridge, but no microwave, since there is one in the lounge of the dorm. To me, microwaves are so inexpensive that it wouldn’t be a big deal to get one, but it is up to them. As far as shopping, since I also have a boy and a girl, I have found it is much more enjoyable to shop for college dorm supplies with a girl than with a boy who couldn’t care less about these things.

you made me laugh out loud with your alphabet village apartment description! My sis had one of those apartments in the same years…bathtub in the kitchen…only hers was on east 66 st…now how swanky is that??
And the Fillmore…was my absolute favorite place…I was in HS in 69-70 (graduated70) we would take the train in (from queens) go to the late show…it didnt matter who was playing.you didnt need tickets in advance you could just show up and see the most amazing people. And the audience shared EVERYTHING…if you know what I mean!!

Motheroftwo-don’t know I don’t think they’ve communicated yet. I asked her if she had emailed her roommate and got an “oh shoot! I meant to do that this morning.” Since her roommate hasn’t contacted her either I guess they’ve done a good job of matching them. I asked my D if she wanted a microwave, she said she didn’t know but she had to have a ref for carrots, I also found the stalk from some broccoli next to the keyboard when I sat down this afternoon. At least she eats her veggies.

My D loves a certain type of orange juice and felt she must have a fridge in case the o.j. they serve in the cafeteria isn’t to her taste ![]()
My D’s roommate had emailed her right after they got their Kenyon email addresses, but my D didn’t log in until more than a week after getting the letter with the email address. She was shocked to see that there were about 85 emails in her inbox (most of them to the whole freshman class), and that her roommate had been waiting to hear from her. I guess a lot of kids wrote emails introducing themselves to the whole freshman class. Since then, she and her roommate have emailed a few times.

We did too, at the private school I went to my freshman year. AND if the maid service could “find” the bed, they would MAKE it. They also vacuumed…if they could find the floor. It was wonderful.

This thread has a little bit of everything in the “memory lane” department. Had a friend who lived on Ave. B back in the early 70’s. I was scared to death to walk into his apartment and I would not have gone there at night at all. His was also a railroad flat and had the bathroom off of the kitchen (I honestly don’t remember a door between the two rooms)…lovely. BUT it was CHEAP…very cheap for NYC.

I am enjoying recalling the girl in my freshman dorm who pulled a Lucy. Never having ever laundered her own clothing (I met the full-time maid later), she put the entire 20 inch tall box of Cheer into a washing machine, and made an entire room of white bubbles pouring out like a creek. It took quite a while for a crew to get the entire room and hall of suds cleared.

This is a great thread - I have literally LOL’d at some of the stories/comments. I remember buying a madris (Indian?) style bedspread in Harvard Square for my dorm room (I believe it also functioned as a room separator at one point) and raiding my mother’s linen closet for used sheets and towels. I can’t imagine where I hung my wet towels. Today I couldn’t remember if I ever really wore slippers (my husband says dear S doesn’t wear them now, he won’t wear them at college - but I am thinking ucky floors). Of course I will buy new sheets and I am seriously considering the Land’s End featherbed but I am no longer considering the $300 memory foam topper I was convinced dear S needed late last night!

OK, do the boys wear bathrobes and slippers in coed dorms or just mesh shorts or the like? Geez, I hope they wear bathrobes, in some regards <g>! I lived in a coed by room dorm and I can’t remember what the boys wore!!!</g>

they wear flip flops not slippers. If they wear any real pajamas at all its just the bottoms with t shirts.Mostly its those mesh shorts.I can’t really believe many of them would bother with a bathrobe. They wear towels in the hallways, its easier than carrying it!

Rileydog-my D just bought a indian cotton bedspread for her dorm room. I told her that when I was in college we hung them on our ceiling and it created a cool glow over the florescent light. I guess all things come back around
