Will Grade recovery effect my chances of admission? [D in HS-level biology in 8th grade, repeated for higher grade; both on HS transcript]

When I was in 8th grade, I took Biology 1 honors and got a D second semester (Corona).

Recently, I retook the class. However, my transcript still shows the D and that I retook the class. I’m worried admission officers will see that and think I’m not doing well or something like that.

For reference, I’m a Junior and my weighted is a 4.198 if that helps.

I wouldn’t worry.

It was 8th grade. It likely won’t have any impact.

Lots of colleges will have interest.

Good luck

When you were in 8th grade… Was this an HS class or CC class? Is this showing up on your HS transcript?

Sounds like this D is on your HS transcript? If so, how will the retake show up on your transcript? What grade did you get on the retake?

If the D remains on the transcript after the retake, I would have your HS counselor address the 8th grade D and the retake with the grade in their rec letter. You can also address it in the common app addt’l info section, but keep it short and factual (but it’s relatively more important to have your counselor address it).

Without knowing more facts from OP, this is what I know.

  1. I don’t know of HS that “replaces” a repeated grade. Meaning everything taken is on transcript. But apparently from reading these forum and getting answers from people much more knowledgeable, my S24 took CC classes right after 8th grade, in summer as well as in 9th grade, all those classes six in total will not get counted for GPA purposes which is unfortunate because 20 units and 4.0 would have boosted his numbers by a lot. But from responses we got from AO, they will count for rigor.

  2. I know for sure some community colleges will “drop” a grade below a “C” when that class is repeated. But the drop is a misnomer because it’s only dropped from its internal GPA calculation, but the non-passing grade is still on the transcript and need to be reported upon transfer/grad school application, unless a program specifically says otherwise. That’s why I always shake my head when students ask to fail the class so they can take it over when they can’t get an A or B. I think the main reason for this is our Nursing program uses the college GPA, so these students will spent up to 3 semesters trying to get an A for required classes.

No matter what, it is what it is. If it’s any consolation, you are better off starting low and finish strong than the other way around. AO likes to see improvement, and whatever struggle you learned from this experience probably makes a good essay topic.

I got an A, and I’ll let her know.

This is neither here nor there for the purposes of this thread, but: In Fairfax County, Virginia, a middle school student who takes a high school-level course can expunge that course from their transcript. It otherwise would appear on their high school transcript, but if expunged it doesn’t and the credit doesn’t count toward graduation. So if a kid took Bio in 8th grade, got a D, and then took it again in 9th grade and got an A, they could expunge the D and there would be no evidence of it. In my S24’s case, he took Algebra I Honors in 8th grade and got a B-, and because of COVID they let kids do credit recovery even if they didn’t fail, so he did Algebra I (not honors) in the summer, got an A, and expunged the B-. So his transcript showed he took regular Algebra I and got an A.

However, where we currently live in NJ, the school does not put middle school grades on the transcript at all, even if high school courses are taken. So for Algebra I and Spanish I, they are not on his transcript at all. And even though he took through Spanish III, according to his current school, he has taken only two years of foreign language.

I think I get what you are saying.

If OP is worried about a “D” from the 8th grade showing up on her overall transcript (Junior High + HS) and that will look bad, when the rest of their HS grades are fine, I doubt that is going to effect OP.

My kids’ school is a K-12 and yes, I see their middle school grades listed on the HS transcript and never gave it any thought because it’s like asking grad school if they care what your SAT/HS GPA is – they don’t; and some schools specifically ask applicants not to list any achievements prior to UG because they don’t care.

Absolutely, I agree that it is probably not going to affect OP. Just pointing out that there are some places/cases where credit recovery will replace a previous grade. It sounds like that isn’t the situation where OP is.

The other thing. OP was in 8th grade. Was three years ago. Now a Junior. Sounds like OP has done well since.

One can’t control the past. What happened has happened.

So OP move forth - and look ahead.

Best of luck.
