Whether or not you will be able to “claim all the money back” depends in large part on whether or not you will have a tax liability after your deduction is applied, and this depends in part on how much earned and unearned income you will have for the tax year. If your income does not exceed the deduction you are entitled to, you will have no tax liability and you will only get the refundable part of the education tax credit, if in fact you are entitled to the refundable part of the credit. So, there’s a chance that you will get no education tax credit.
