<p>Two comments:</p>
<p>1) Research the Honors program carefully, IMO it doesn’t stack up that well against many other schools, and offers no benefits in terms of preferential class registration, preferential housing, etc.</p>
<p>2) IIRC something like 20% of students are in the Honors program, I think there’s a conclusion to be drawn there, but I’ll let you connect the dots for yourself.</p>
<p>Don’t get me wrong, I think UMass is a great school.</p>
<p>Also, why would you want to kill yourself with engineering if you plan on being a dentist? The engineering curriculum (as it is at most if not all engineering schools) is very structured and rigid. And hard. Example, it will be very difficult/near impossible to study abroad if you have an interest in that.</p>
