Will I regret buying a roadster/convertible? Mazda MX-5 RF

I think he wants it. I hope you like his car if you get it.

If you can’t decide between a “fun” convertible and a “utilitarian” SUV, why not consider a Jeep? You can take the top off (and everything else), haul stuff, and sit higher off the ground.

I have never driven a Jeep, but does it have good acceleration? If OP were to consider a SUV, I would get an X-3.

While the X3 is a nicer SUV, it is in a completely different price class than the CX-5.

For the price, the CX-5 is a great SUV. The latest model is super quiet, and it handles quite well. If it had more power, it would start threatening the German SUVs in terms of capability, but not image of course.

@pishicaca - excellent points to consider. I’m in the 5th decade of my life, and I’m in fairly good shape physically. I do like the “image,” I think.

@cbreeze - you may be right!

@tutumom2001 - Jeeps seem too tall to me, and I don’t want a rag top. Nowhere to store a removable hard top.

I am not concerned about image. I could buy something pricier, but I just don’t care to spend $20 - $30k more. Not putting that choice down at all. I’d just rather spend the differential on other things.

Haha, so true. Dh bought himself a Jeep a couple of years ago after having had one as a second car in his 20s. I must say, in warm weather, when he is out of town or needs to borrow my SUV, I love getting to drive his. Hmm, he just took my car this morning to drive my son’s carpool and left me with his Jeep. Supposed to be u seasonably warm today here in the 70s. I may have to throw the top back!

Hmmm, this is part of the analysis paralysis that has kept us from purchasing a car, tho our cars are 19 and 20 years old. We can’t decide what car to buy next. We have ridden in Teslas and though we love the concept don’t like getting in and out without bumping our heads. It’s also uncomfortable to turn and speak for any length of time to folks in the back seat.

I kind of want an electric car, kind of want s SUV, kind of want a fun car but just can’t decide and neither can H, so we are like you, @Hoggirl, except we both have ruled out convertibles as neither of us enjoy those.

I think the only way out of “analysis paralysis” is to give yourself permission upfront to sell it sooner than later if and when you decide you don’t like it.

We are renting a hybrid Prius because we opted for that over a sports car or SUV when the full-size car we wanted was unavailable after landing on our trip. H looked at the Camero and said he’s not a fan of low cars—too hard to get in and out. So far, he’s enjoying the Prius.

I highly recommending renting for a week. For us, it will be $185. A deal for getting to know a cat better.

I am going back tomorrow afternoon to drive both again. We’ve had other stuff going on. I will report back what I decide. 'Cause I know all y’all have been losing sleep over this… :))

We have two 2018 CX-5’s. They handle well, pretty sporty, and seats are more comfortable than the Miata, especially for longer drives.

I’m 90% sure I’m going with the convertible. However, the 2018s are just now rolling in, so I may have to wait for a bit to get exactly what I want. Which is fine - I’m not in any particular hurry.

I’m sure you will love whatever you get. Be happy! Live life!
