For my $10 essay I went off a bit… At first I was going to make it realistic, but I could not come up with something that I really could possibly do that would be interesting… Thus, I ended up writing about the eerie Toxic Waste Stream (which does exist, honestly–there is a stream that has much runoff from a factory and there are pools of thick, black goo around it) in my back yard, and wrote it rather tongue-in-cheek… but I realize now that they may think my “creativity” is just a joke… because I don’t really care… But that is most definitely not true (JHU is my number one choice university)… I’m really stressing out about this now. I can’t believe I didn’t realize this before… :'(

if ur applying ed, and u have all your other things filled out nicely, im sure they wont take it as a joke. and plus, how many people fill out an entire college app as a joke?? dont worry!

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. The essay is supposed to be approached in a creative way, and I know that the adcoms read many “tongue-in-cheek” responses. If you are really concerned, you may want to email the Admissions counselor for your state (find here: http://apply.jhu.edu/contact/staff.html) and just provide them the context of your essay. I don’t think it is necessary, but that may be the only way you can relax about it.
