Coaches are given all sorts of recruiting perks (exact numbers for different levels of priority/guarantees, admission pre-reads, etc.) that music directors simply don’t have - but they absolutely can tell admissions that they need/want a particular musician … not the same level of guarantee, but it absolutely does matter!

There are PLENTY of perfect scores by kids who had no tutoring. And there are free study guides so…

And I know a lot of kids who were tutored for months on end and didn’t submit a score because it never got there.

The best “tutoring” is a lifetime of challenging classes in attentive schools, filling the summer gap, norms of reading for pleasure in the family, and so on. I think the prep classes and tutoring and such can help with specific test-taking strategies and techniques, but the real foundation is laid over many, many years.

And yes, all that often takes very significant financial resources. The prep itself, though, can often be done through self-study/Khan. Even then, though, the trick is getting informed guidance on what you need to do and when.
