Window screens not keeping tiny bugs (gnats?) out anymore

Spoke with someone from the window manufacturer this morning. He said often, when you take screens in somewhere to have them redone, they stretch the mesh too tight so that the screen frame has a small bow to it and never quite fits the window frame as snugly. Unfortunately since our screens had some small tears in them, I thought replacing the mesh would take care of it. So I spent money having 8 screens re-meshed, basically all for nothing now.

The window manufacturer (Casco) has a service where one of their technicians makes a house call and measures out every window where you want a screen replaced. They can note such subtle differences as ¼" and ⅛" and have the screens made to fit very snugly. They charge $240 to make this service call, then there’s an additional cost for each screen made. I could do the measurements myself and save the $240 for the service call, but then they don’t guarantee the snuggest fitting.

So I’m feeling better that there seems to be a solution to my problem, although it will cost some money. In the meantime, one of the cords in my Hunter Douglas trio shade in our bedroom also broke, so I’m dealing with them on getting a replacement cord (at least there’s no charge for it) sent out. This must be the year of window issues for us!

Short-term solution if the bugs are coming in between the screen frame and the window: scotch tape the seams.

In my area (eastern MA), most glass places also will re-screen the screen frames, and many can build new frames as well. It’s pretty cheap, and I no longer bother trying to re-screen myself.
