Windows 8 Upgrade Promotion

I played around with the Modern UI (formerly called Metro) last night and ran into the same problems that you did. The controls weren’t there or they weren’t obvious. I believe that they are using the Apple paradigm on Modern - you don’t close Apps - you just move to the next one.

I get out of an App by hitting the Windows key - that brings you back to Modern. I also have a dual-monitor system and the second monitor displays the desktop when the first monitor displays Modern. I can just click in the second monitor and the first monitor goes back to desktop.

The problem with using Modern Apps is that you can’t see the desktop - you just see at most, two Apps. If you want to use the traditional desktop, then you have to install the traditional Windows x86 version of it. In your case, this would be the Skype Windows program and not the Modern App.

My plan is to mainly use the desktop - we’ll see if Modern is useful down the road.

What don’t you like about the MacBook Pro? Mine is five years old and I’ve been very happy with it - though I use it mainly for work.

Well, for one thing, nothing is where it belongs, lol! There’s a laundry list… There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the computer, it’s the platform. Just personal preference.

blueiguana, nothing is where it belongs on Windows 8, either. So you might as well stay put. :)

Well, you could just install Windows on it. I use a variety of operating systems on a regular basis so I have to be able to adapt quickly to what I have to work on.

I found a webpage on creating tiles for shutdown and reboot and I added one for shutdown. It’s not obvious as to how you shutdown your system on Windows 8. My approach is to click my name, log out, then there’s a power-down button in the following screen. Pretty clunky. I did find a shutdown button by using Charms and something else but that’s a pain in the neck to do. A shutdown tile should work well.

One annoyance is that you don’t have any control on where tiles go.
