Windows 8 vs Macs laptops for 2013-2014?

I speak the truth. The individuals don’t matter.

No one in my family as far as I can tell own a windows 8 PC lol

You’d be surprised at how well they run on really old machines. I had Win 8 running on machines as old as early P4s.

So long as they had 768 MB of RAM or better, they were fine for basic office apps and light multimedia.

Maybe I should try it on an old P4 Laptop. The problem with that system is overheating but it has a fabulous display - 1920x1200 on 15.4 inches. I could look into fixing the overheating with an external fan. Decreasing the OS CPU requirements would really help.

If you feel comfortable doing so, open up the laptop and strip it until you get full access to the fan area and intake fins. Use compressed air to clean off the accumulated dust.

Once as much dust has been cleaned off from the fan area, reassemble everything and try running it.

What model is that laptop out of curiosity?

I’ve cleaned it out before and it only makes a minor difference.

It’s a Dell Inspiron 8500. Talk about old school. No WiFi. Dial-up port. Parallel and Serial ports. Floppy, CD, PCMCIA and Firewire.

The laptop always had heat issues. I recall trying to resolve the heat issues from when I received it. My current approach on laptop heat issues is to mount it on spools with a USB fan underneath.

Well I got it set up and I couldn’t find the power brick (looked for it for about 30 minutes). So this project is dead until I can find the power brick. We do a whole house cleaning in the spring so I should be able to find it next year.

If it was a Mac, it would be no problem of course.

I have a similar vintage laptop a friend of a client dumped on me after prepaying for work to be performed on it(RAM/HDD upgrade/OS reinstall) and deciding he didn’t want it anymore.

With 1 GB RAM maxed out, it ran Win 7 surprisingly well.

Only snag is that the LCD CCFL bulb died a year ago. Need to decide what to do with it as it’s taking up space atm.

P4-Ms do run much cooler than their desktop counterparts…which Dell in its finite wisdom decided to install in their Inspiron 1100 line. So many overheating issues along with other QC problems.

On Windows Blue, the articles I’ve read make it out to be a pretty big improvement. I’ve heard that it would be similar to OS X or Android in that it would be the first of a series of yearly updates. By releasing many small updates, rather than a few big ones, Windows will be more dynamic and fresh. That’s a pretty big deal.

Also, I’ve heard it will include more options for the user, such as the option to boot directly into desktop mode and the inclusion of an old-style start bar. This was semi confirmed through a recent leak. Of course, in either case these are already available through a few simple mods, like previously mentioned.

However, these are mostly still rumors. Nothing has been truly confirmed.

As for getting a desktop/laptop for under $1000,
pick a desktop,

Please note that this was without any deal searching, I just went to a couple websites and found some good computers. If you shopped around, you could probably find better deals on a lot of that stuff, or find better computers for the same price.

On windows blue, any rumor on when it’ll come with the next laptops?

Not sure, but it’ll probably be announced at Microsoft’s Build developer’s conference on June 26th
