When BC and Eastern WA were burning, a smoke alarm went off in my house here north of Seattle. It was that strong.
Stay safe, everyone! Fire is scary.

Yes, I was even a bit farther south from Stanford today and, by the time I got home, (about 20 minutes north of Stanford), my eyes were burning. I really can’t imagine what it’s like in the north bay.
My D lives not far from the Napa fire and is involved with the equestrian community in the area. I saw on her Facebook page that they are strongly suggesting that people get their large animals out while they can. Not to wait for an evacuation order because at that point it might not be possible for the rescue organizations to reach you. She works in Fairfield and said the air quality is really bad. A good friend of my D and her BF have family who lost their home in Santa Rosa and more family who are presently evacuated.
With the winds the fires can really pick up at night. We have had several fires in the last couple of years that at night we could see the flames on the hillside yet during the day the fire would die down. When we built out house 20 years ago we had to put a fire free shingle on the roof along with fire sprinklers. Our old house had a wood shake roof and years ago we had a fire that came close and I remember being annoyed with my H who was on the roof watering down the shingles with a garden hose.
I hope everyone is safe.
It is another long night for us in our area. No evacuation order yet, just an recommendation to be prepared for evacuation. Went to the grocery store today and although there were lots of people there, it was eerily calm and quiet. Everyone is in a state of disbelief.
Voluntary evacuation orders have been expanded tonight to new neighborhoods in Santa Rosa. Red flag warnings are until 5 pm tomorrow.
One of my college roommates parents in law lives in Sonoma. She is currently in Sonoma packing them up to possibly evacuate out of Sonoma. Her inlamws. live in an area of Sonoma that is closer to Petaluma. She said this area still has power. I’m very worried for their safety because the winds have picked up.
So tragic. Will check with S’s who live in the SF area/silicon valley to see what they can see/smell.
My son’s college roommate’s parents own wineries in Napa and I’ve been checking their FB page to see if they are affected. So far they are fine. They posted a link today to local Napa organization for donations for fire victims. http://www.napavalleycf.org/fire-donation-page/?utm_content=buffer7166f&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

^^Working link. When posting links discovered via an intermediary site, get rid of the ? and the rest of the junk that follows. It is a tail that simply identifies the reference source.
A friend of mine is a high school teacher in Oakland – school was cancelled today and tomorrow because the air has gotten so smoky… Oakland is some 60 miles away…
My daughter is in the area and said it was smoky in San Fran this morning.
Son sent a pic from Stanford showing haze. Says you can smell the smoke esp in the AM.
My D says schools in Fairfield and Vacaville have been closed since Tuesday and will remain close through tomordue to air quality.
My sister in Marin said that her kids have no school tomorrow due to so many of the teachers and staff being impacted by the fires.
I’m in Carmel and we are starting to get smoke here, too.
Our best man and his partner finally checked in as “safe” on facebook. They hadn’t posted anything since the fires started, and we were worried. They breed dogs and have quite a few large, not easy to evacuate animals on their property. No word on the animals or their property, but we are so relieved they are safe.
DS#2’s fiancée frequently bikes to work. Not today. Air quality is bad. He drove her. DS#1 and family had a trip p,an ned to So Cal this weekend. I here the air is worse ther than in NorCal.
DH and I spent a month in Carmel in August. We made many day trips, driving 2-5 hours from Carmel. I saw LOTS of brown, dry hills that illustrated drought conditions. One area that did NOT look vulnerable to fires was Napa. Everywhere you looked was lush and green. We figured all the irrigation in place to nurture the vinyards kept it safe. Clearly not.
The loss of life and homes is horrible. But the economic impact will be huge as well. HUGE.
More ash has fallen in the Outer Richmond area of San Francisco. My eyes are tearing and it is very dry. Air quality is the poorest in this area since they began keeping records.
Our favorite winery sent an update that they are Ok and all of their staff members are safe.
This is simply dreadful. Fire is incredibly frightening.
I thought that the California drought was supposed to be more or less over? Wishing northern CA a downpour right now.

This was a fascinating story of survival.
