Wine Wins!

I second the Kim Crawford Sav blanc recommendation. We also really like Ca Montini Pinot Grigio.

I like Casillero del Diablo cabernet too!

My go to Malborough Sav Blanc is oyster Bay. It’s cheaper than Kim Crawford and I can’t tell the difference.

It’s what they serve in the Air New Zealand biz class lounge in Aukland !

I’m really open to various wines, but for Cabernet, DH has recently decided he won’t drink it if it’s not Groth. Obviously, this would never be an every night thing, but probably once a week or once every other.

I like Smith and Hook cab.

I vote with BunsenBurner on the Apothic Red. A PA state store employee suggested it to me once, and I really like it. (Although like emilybee I tend to choose my wines by the label.) My sister lived in France for a couple of years and I will never buy wine to serve them, they always bring their own (wine snobs!)

We had a 2011 Caves Sainte-Pierre Vacqueyras that I purchased at Trader Joes for $13. It was amazing paired with an arugula salad w/Gorgonzola and my homemade potato-leek soup. Alas, when I returned to TJs to purchase more, I was told that we probably drank the last bottle of this vintage and they had no plans to purchase more from this vineyard. But I was able to find a 2012 Vacqueyras for $18 at Total Wine. It was rated 93 by Wine Spectator, so I have high hopes for it.

GMTplus - I’m with you on the Amarone. That’s another great wine. Cin cin!

I once took a “Wines of California” class and the instructor said the best wine is the one you like at a cheap price. That said, I’m a fan of:
Trader Joes Coastal Cabernet Sauvigion
Blue Fin California Chardonnay
Chateau St. Michelle Riesling for summer
Sabon Old Vine Zinfandel
Honestly I don’t think I would pass a blind taste test between expensive vintage and low-shelf hidden treasure wines.

Red Rock Malbec. Full of flavor but with a crisp finish. Lots of fruit flavors but some mineral flavors also.

I thought I’d make this request on this thread, it seems appropriate to put it here.

If I get quarantined and stuck in a tent somewhere, would someone here who lives nearby bring me a bottle of your favorite red wine? I mean, I could live in a tent with a porta potty for awhile…as long as I had some good wine (and coffee) to keep me going. You could just leave it with the people with masks and gloves. I am actually quite serious, I would appreciate it immensely! Just thinking ahead .

How about some chocolate to go with that wine, @busdriver11‌ ? And cheese…I could live quite happily with chocolate, wine and cheese!!

Yea, shellz! That would be virtually all I need.

I am assuming they would give me a pillow, blanket, and if I’m lucky…internet, so I can get my message through to you all.

We will be standing by!!

busdriver: when you send your SOS, I’m sending a case of my favorite red and a case of dark roast w/chicory. I hope you will have 11 of each left to take home to share with your family. Good Luck!!

adding: and I’m sending a small coffee pot just in case, and a cork screw, and glasses… and a nice big mug for the coffee…

Thanks, guys!

Very generous of you, alh, I will hold you to it. And with an entire case, there is no way I’d have 11 left;, heh heh! I think maybe it would be safest to stay alternately drunk and highly caffeinated, just in case it helps with the virus. Hey, you never know! In fact, maybe I should get a head start on it right now.

Though I admit, I am probably at very little risk. I travel constantly and stay in far too many unsterilized hotel rooms, but so does everyone else. My company also has the CDC contract, so we’re carrying whatever nasty things they decide to ship. I’m counting on them to pack everything well, but should anything go wrong, I know I can count on you guys to keep me covered!

Actually, care packages for people stuck in quarantines for any reason sounds like a good idea. That would make the misery of waiting to get (or hopefully not get) sick a lot better.

busdriver, I’m in your neck of the woods and am standing by. Do you think I’ll need to supply wine for everybody on the plane? That might be a problem.

Box wine in coach?

Hey, I think if people are confined, they’ll drink anything they can get!

Our go-to wine is Rosemont (now estates) Shiraz. Not always found easily here in Tampa. Introduced to it more than a decade ago and still like it.

H likes dry while I like sweet wines- eg Chardonnay /Riesling we do not share while some whites in between those we can both enjoy.

Malbecs in various brands currently available and good. I do not like Yellow Tail wines.

There are so very many wines available here in Tampa in even the grocery stores it is hard to choose a brand. No reason to spend much more than $10-even less on sale.

IMO, it’s not being a snob. When it comes to red wine, I don’t think anybody can beat french wine yet. Same for rosé if you can get your hand on one from Alpes-de-Haute-Provence…

Love a good Rose’ - so underrated here in the states. Try the 13’ Chateau Miraval - wonderful and reasonably priced Rose’. I do Rose’ at week-end lunches. Pairs great with a salad or other light fare.
