Winter 2013 Transfer Thread

@cn9a51 - I would think that we’d be able to contact our department advisor after being admitted because we need advice on what we should be taking next semester. Every college has different class names and requirements for different majors. If not, registration will be a bit difficult

@redsdave03: Thank you so much! Do you know UCBerkley? I heard from my friend saying that UCB is a place that is too big to really get to know anyone.

UC Berkeley’s official campus size is 6,651 acres. That is absolutely immense, but I’ve heard that a decent portion of that is agricultural land used only for research. My guess is that the actual college campus is probably around 1,000 acres. I have a friend who goes to Cal Berkeley. He said it’s big but he hasn’t had much trouble making friends. I guess it’s all about getting involved in things to make the college feel smaller. It also helps to stay on campus in a dorm. People normally don’t make friends in lecture based classes because they’re huge. It also probably depends on the type of person as well.

@cn9a51 - After being admitted and paying the $200 deposit, you will receive an email detailing orientation. They still haven’t sent any of them out yet, but they should be released around mid-November. After you receive the email, you sign up for an orientation date, and go to U-M on that day. When you are there, you will meet with an advisor. They will ask you to pick a major and tell them how you would like your existing credits to be distributed to fill U-M graduation requirements. They’ll help you with that and scheduling for next semester as well.

@megagamerexe: Could I know after the deposit, is there a deadline to pay the tuition and fees?

@megagamerexe do you know where you and albo23 will be living? I’m thinking maybe North Quad.

When do we find out what credits transfer?

@Dreamingowl - I don’t know about tuition, but I think the deposit is due by December 1st.

@Matisyahu - I have no idea where I’ll be living. Ideally I’d like to live around the Hill area since I have a bunch of friends who live there now, and it is a pretty nice location.

As for the transferring of credits form, I think we are supposed to receive an email about that with the housing forms and orientation sign up dates. From what I understand, those won’t be released for a bit longer. I just hope I can attend the first orientation. My last final at MSU is on December 14th, so hopefully the first orientation is after that. lol

@megagamerexe can we call an adviser before we can actually meet?

@Matisyahu - I don’t see why not. I just don’t think that calling ahead of time will help you pick your schedule sooner. You should give it a try though. It wouldn’t hurt.

Summer school does not count GPA into college transcript GPA, but would u-m still care about how much grade you get for summer school? I spent lot of time in freshman summer preparing retaking SAT test while at the same time studying summer school, whose grade was not high as it suppose to be if i put full time and effort on it.

@Dreamingowl why wouldn’t summer school count?

@Matisyahu: I don’t know yours, but my college does not include summer school GPA into my college’s own transcript. The course and credits can be transfered, and the summer school grade would appear on the transfered credit college transcript, but summer school’s GPA does not count into my college’s GPA. That’s why when I was frustrated about my summer school GPA, my college’s professor said:" dont worry about it." But I am not sure whether U-M would emphasize summer school too.

@Dreamingowl, you’re overthinking this. Basically look at it this way. Everything that you submit to UM counts. People are reviewing your application and will take into account anything you send them. In your case, since your summer term credits are transferrable and are the same as the fall/winter semester courses, UM will certainly count them. They’re not stupid, they don’t just look at the number written by your college and use that to decide if you’re a good enough student or not. They will likely recalculate your GPA based on how their own system. Hypothetically, if you had a bunch of Cs during the Summer term, UM would see it and consider the fact you had those Cs and adjust your GPA accordingly. From what I know about the admissions office, they will take into account everything they know about you and your college and humans will make a decision after judging your application as a whole. That’s why the kid who posted that his UM plea version of I Want You Back on Youtube was accepted. Just remember that they do not mechanically evaluate your application like a computer, they are as flexible as you are when deciding.

@anthonyxy21: Thanks very much. I got it.

Is Ann Arbor an “expensive town” ? In addition to common tuition and textbook fees, how much usually do students spend per semester or year averagely?

It’s slightly higher than the national average in terms of cost of living. I’m planning on living on campus at least next semester maybe even after that, so I’m not too worried. What students spend per semester probably depends on what social activities they join (frats and sororities have financial obligations) and what they do for fun in Ann Arbor. I spent an arm and a leg at my current school to buy all these fricken art supplies for architecture school. Thank God I won’t have to do that anymore…

does anyone think they will release some decisions right after midnight/tomorrow?

I sure hope so. I’m dying to here something…anything…

@redsdave03 Oh my gosh…I SO know what you mean! I feel like I am going nuts checking WA all the time! It’s my mom’s bday tomorrow also and I wanted to give an acceptance to her as a gift! haha!
