Wireless Home Network Security

Routers usually provide a control program through web pages that you can connect to if you are hardwired to the router. It usually allows you to monitor who’s using the router, what IP addresses they are visiting, who’s trying to connect to your router. You can set up logging to see who is coming and going.

There are usually a ton of things that you can set and control too.

You can see this information by logging into your router. For instance, I type 192.168.1.1 in my explorer bar. From there you can easily find the tabs for maintenance and check the usage. You’d be looking for “attached devices.” More recent routers come with an installation and you may have an icon to log in as well. It’s a good idea to check the router for recent upgrades.

Also, you could download a program such as Cisco’s Network Magic for the 7 day free trial. It will create a visual map of everything that is connected to your router.

Please be aware that <unknown> does not mean your are being invaded by an intruder. Devices such as wireless printers or your smartphone might not show up with a clear ID.</unknown>

PS I wonder if DadII will discover the SpyCam that CC installed at his house.
PPS In case you cannot find the default password for the router, this might help:

Go to your computer’s “system properties” to see what you named your computer. I think that is what people can see on their routers if/when you connect to someone elses network.

And cc spycam, xig ?!?! LOL!! Did you get a good deal on used camera equipment from ebay or craigslist?

Question - how does DadII see who else is using his network? I’ve never noticed that info on my computer/don’t know how to look for it.

on a Mac- even if the other networks are locked, if I have my system options to see available networks they are shown.

For the Iphone and similar Apple products, you need to go through ITunes. You can change the name by clicking on the name that shows up. For example, you can change from Owner’s Iphone to Tool’s Tool.

A report on NBC news just recently ran where a man opened his door to a dozen armed FBI agents who had come to arrest him for downloading large amounts of child pornography. Turns out he lived in a 12th story condo and someone on a boat in a marina more than 2 city blocks away was using his wireless signal. The report went on to explain how using some common supplies, including a Pringles can, can boost a signal. Apparently, a large percentage of households do not have any security on their WIFI signal. Luckily, they were able to track the person using his signal and he was not charged in the case. I passed along this story to my college-aged kids to always password protect their wireless routers.

On a similar subject for those with Mac computers (you can do this with windows based also, I just don’t know how).

Anytime you enter a credit card number or other private info always use the mouse with the keyboard viewer. This way, no one can track your keystrokes. I have my keyboard viewer set up on the top right side of my screen. Just go system preferences and open “keyboard” on the bottom check “show keyboard and character viewer”

puppywuppy and kittywitty work great until you have to put something unique on the end and then I can never remember…gee does this password have a number, a capital letter or some other character in it.

I just got a new linksys router and the installation disc already comes with password protection. This is the first time I didn’t require help to set it up. Things are getting more user friendly.

To xiggi, BCEagle, jym, Kajon and any other of my tech-savvy friends who answered my question.

Thanks so much. But… for me… sadly… TMI.
