I am a bad mom. Dh had always taken the kids to the dentist. When after one visit he told me the dentist said to go to a specialist to have ds’ impacted wisdom teeth evaluated, I asked what the problem is. Dh can’t answer as usual and we let it slide. When we got around to taking ds to the oral surgeon the surgeon said the impacted teeth has grown too close to the nerve and is touching the next teeth, so taking it out would be risky. At least the surgeon said that tooth is not likely to cause him any problems, being completely impacted and fully grown already.

Not about wisdom teeth but about pain meds:

When S2 broke his arm (majorly), he was given Percocet. I told him he should take it if needed; he decided that since it was prescribed, he should take it. Two days later, he said to me, “Mommy, Percocet is awesome.”

I suggested he move on to Aleve.

cornmuffin, my husband who is a dentist said yes, go ahead and have them all out so he doesn’t have to go through it again and they won’t cause problems at an inopportune time in the future like finals week. My college-bound son is getting his out this summer although they are not causing him any problems now.

Side note:

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy requires all freshmen to have their wisdom teeth removed prior to being enrolled. The midshipmen are away at sea for a total of twelve months during their sophomore and junior years. Merchant vessels don’t carry a doctor aboard ,much less a dentist. The school wants to limit any foreseeable problems that may occur far out at sea.

S got all 4 of his removed in Feb. When we got in the car he says, ‘Woo-HOO!’ haha. And then he proceeds to tell me that the nurses were really nice and they sang Cher songs and danced. That that’s what they did, sang and danced for the patients.

He was still in the beginning of the semester with Calc and Physics and really wanted to go back full bore. So I researched for alternative ways of healing quickly, detoxing anesthesia, etc so he could go back to a heavy schedule as fast as possible. One of the best ones was fresh juiced pineapple. Not only was it great for healing, he said it was the best juice he had ever had!
