World Book Night

Hey Mommafrog, will be picking up my books tomorrow.
I will be giving out Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett, and read the book last summer.
Happy to hear there is a Book Giver Pin- was hoping there is some way to identify us.
Where are you giving out books? I will be going to local convenient store chain, hoping for lots of traffic.
I, too, am so excited to be part of this. Thanks to Ignatius for mentioning it months ago. Our Women’s Club is sponsoring a free drawing in our library for Hunger Game books -which we purchased, as a way to celebrate World Book Night.

I work with infants and toddlers w/disabilities and their families in their homes. Many of these parents have no money for a book. I got permission from WBN to extend my “night” over the course of a couple weeks, as I will give a book to a parent on my next home visit as a way to remind them to take minute for themselves (even if it’s reading a page while brushing their teeth!).

Picking mine up today!

I’m late to the party, but what a great idea!

** mommafrog**
Love your target audience.

A bit concerned about identifying “non or light” readers, but thought I’d ask people what is the last book they’ve read, and that would be a tell tale sign.
Wish I had “The Hunger Games”- hope Bel Canto isn’t hard to give out.

Am making TShirts to identify us.
I didn’t even get a PIN, which some people have received.

The books are beautiful, and I’m uploading pictures of the books, the box, my pick up location (school library) , and uploaded to FACEBOOK the WBN logo for PROFILE and pictures of all the books for COVER PICTURE, which you can get on their web site.

Cottonwood, check out Worldbooknight.org web site, and you can be a “giver” next year!
They are already starting a sign up list.

** Abasket** where are you giving out ?

I work at a medical campus/medical school - we have several clinics in the building I am in. Will be strolling the building every couple of hours today and looking for adults/families (the book I chose is Because Of Winn Dixie - for the purpose that I want to promote adults reading with their children of all ages) that seem appropriate (at risk for being low readers/not having books at home).

I have my button on, my books and bookmarks in a tote and am ready to go! If you have Facebook or Twitter accounts be sure to post your activities to help create awareness!

**Happy World Book Night **
Abasket, like your idea of targeting the “families” who will be interested.

I am giving out Bel Canto, and assume this book appeals more to women then men, so probably targeting women.

Wish I had a button, but alas, my newly made, decent looking, grey World Book Night Tshirt I made will do. I ironed on red letters, “World Book Night”- so that looks nice, and stenciled some small red hearts around the collar. It will do.

But, it occurred to me I should notify, and ask permission from Wawa (our NJ popular local convenience store) manager if it will be ok for two of us to be doing this in front of their store.
Printing out literature, to give credibility to the cause.

Everyone report back how it goes, and what “technigues, strategies” worked best!

Happy Giving :)

Just gave out my last books! :)

Even though I work with literacy and book giving everyday as part of my job, it was a delight to see the reactions of adults - mostly parents - that I introduced WBN to and shared my book Winn Dixie. I gave to a single dad and his daughter, a grandma who had 2 grandchildren with her, among others. I think they all felt “special” to be part of a special day nationwide. I told them that they were “1 in a million” - in more ways than one today. A couple of the adults shook my hand in thanks. A couple were beaming with smiles. A success, I think!!

^ A success for sure! Great report ** abasket** !!!

I’m stealing your line “1 in a million” -----when I got out in a hour.

I asked Wawa’s manager if we could give out at their store at 5 and they told me I needed corporate approval ,so moving to the local grocery store. (Need it there too, but hopefully will have given out the books before we get ‘asked to move’)

I’ll let you know.

It’s been fun reading all the different stories and places of,distribution on the Twitter feed.

Have fun!

Our Shoprite was perfect location around 5:00pm, after work shoppers very happy recipients. I went with a friend, and many people thought we were selling books. Many uninterested people, were more receptive once we told them they were free books and what the project is all about. They were really amazed.
Obviously, NO one had heard of WBN, so hopefully, there will be widespread PR and it will be better known.

All in all, a great time giving them out, all gone in about 15 minutes. Good thing without official approval from Shoprite, we thought we’d be “asked to leave”.

THen off to the library where we held a Womens Club Drawing in celebration- the club bought the Hunger Games, Trilogy, and we donated those books and a couple of Bel Canto’s from the WBN collection.
The six winners were thrilled to get those phone calls.

And, I love seeing the pictures and reading the stories on their facebook page- World Book Night USA ! Amazing. so cool.

THANK YOU IGNATIUS FOR SHARING WITH US!

Aww sounds like your experience was great!

I told my people to watch/listen to the news tonight and they might hear/see about the day nationwide.

So far not on news in NJ, maybe print tomorrow. I hope so, this deserves more coverage
