World Cup fever!

That’s was a God Bless America goal.

I haven’t read this entire thread. My daughter is living in Switzerland right now and in a building full of international young people from many countries. She just told us on Skype that the World Cup is a big deal and she was about to go watch Team USA play in the common room of her building. Not sure if she’ll be the only American but that is a distinct possibility (she just moved there and so does not know anyone yet who lives in her building). Another year she was living in France when they were in the finals and that was also a neat thing to be there during that time. She has played soccer her whole life until the past couple of years.

U.S.A. beats England 1 to 1 ;)

That was our toughest opponent in the group.

U.S. tied due to the failure of England’s goalkeeper. They didn’t beat England. That said, they should advance to the next round given the fact that England was their toughest opponent, as gloworm already mentioned.

A win’s a win. I’ll take it!!! U-S-A! U-S-A!

But a draw isn’t

Heehee! I meant a goal’s a goal.

Even though the score was 1-1, the Brits don’t consider it much of a win. It was all around a bad day for folks in the UK watching on ITV. According to The Guardian, ITV had preprogrammed adverts, and went to one so Gerrard’s goal was missed.

Columnist Paul Wilson used these words to describe Green’s effort on Dempsey’s goal:

…unforced error…

…goalkeeping error that will never be forgotten…

…howler to end all howlers…

He had some not-so-kind words for most of the team (side).

Until today, I had no idea England had such a long line of poor goailes. I was reading a story on espn.com about a guy who was called “Calamity” James. lmao. I hate to tie on a goalie error, but that’s the breaks. Now, to wake up early tomorrow to size up the competition.

Anybody got a link to a video of the US goal? We were on an airplane…

NVM…found it

The only thing that could have exonerated England’s goalie’s mistake would have been if England had won. As it is, the US almost managed to win that game!

In my area (Chitown) the game is being replayed on the local Univision channel.

I am all for the host nation culture and the vuvuzelas and all of that, but could they at least cut it out for the few minutes that the playing nations’ anthems are being played???

Watching Sky News from the UK and the constant mention of what they have labeled “the HORROR SHOW”. I think that poor goaltender is going to get more flack than Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood combined…gotta feel for the guy. Reminds me of the poor Colombian player that was shot after his own-goal against the US.

As the mother of a keeper…sometimes you block them…sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you are so over confident that you take the moment “casually” and I think that is what happened to Mr Green today. I do feel for him…when a goalie messes up everyone sees…when other players mess up…the game just goes on.

I am thinking he should probably have a career back-up plan. Soccer is a religion in England, and he may be ex-communicated!

Just saw a great quote.

Stephen Gerrard says the whole team stands behind keeper Robert Green. In retrospect, that would have been a good idea.

I’m sure the Scots are pleased though.

They don’t. England has had trouble replacing Seaman after he retired in 2002, but James has been solid for the most part. The biggest problem over the years, though, has been mental blunders. That includes the bad mistakes from the goalies, but also a horrible penalty record, the Beckham send-off, and the Rooney send-off.

One thing that has been really annoying about the coverage has been the insistence on using nicknames for various teams. References to “the Three Lions” are just goofy, as is the old “Team USA.”

If he goalie didn’t fluff it, the score would hve been 1-0 - whoopie. Is England that bad or the US that good?

England has some of the best players in the world (Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, etc) and the US shut them down.

blackeyedsusan, you’re funny.

ilovedcollege, as the mom of a baseball player I cringed when I saw the goalie not square up on the ball. Same thing happens to infielders. Mental error.

ETA: Dadof3, probably neither.
