World Cup fever!

Wow, what a victory- so exciting. Announcer said one of most dramatic women’s or men’s games ever? !

who got carded?

Beuhler, in the box. Foul on Marta. Not deserving of a red card, IMO. We played a man down for 60ish minutes.

Shrink, we don’t have cable so we watch on espn3.com. They are replaying at midnight EST. This game is so worth watching. Maddening.

I have to say that I lost a lot of respect for Marta and the whole Brazilian team. And I hope the lead ref never gets another World Cup game.

Ah! I thought it might be her; and I plan to watch tonight, thanks.

Wow wow wow wow wow! The justice of it and the beauty! I haven’t screamed and jumped and cried so much in a long time. This should be a boost for women’s soccer and soccer in general.

Well, don’t count on anyone in your house getting sleep because you’ll be screaming the whole time. At least we were. Had to put the dog in the garage because we were freaking him out …

I don’t know why I am still so angry about a win. I think the final straw was Erika’s faked injury, and then how she hopped off that stretcher the minute she got off the field. It was all that extra time she was wasting that allowed us to tie it up. Who got the last laugh?

ETA: If you watch the postgame celebration, you see Beuhler crying. I’m sure she felt so bad to put her team in that position. But, really, we played better with 10 than we had with 11. I keep hearing what great condition our girls are in, and they really proved it today. Just an awesome, awesome game.

It will only be 9 PM here, and I think we’ll all be watching. Husband is flying back from Florida today and son only caught it form the 60th minute.

Pretty amazing winning a man down for most of the game! I’ve seen teams play better a man down, but for 50 minutes?

That “gameswomanship” came back and bit Brazil in their Brazilian booties. Best soccer game I’ve ever witnessed!

My homegirl Abby comes through again!!!

It will be interesting to see how much of a welcome Marta gets when she comes back since she plays here, I have to admit she is the best woman player that I have ever seen.

The end of extra time was a classic example of how purposely delaying a game like Erika did can come back to bite you - sheer karma!

I was suprised and thrilled how the crowd turned on Marta … hard. I didn’t get a particularly strong US sentiment early, but the crowd started booing and catcalling Marta after the foul and penalty kick nonsense.

I love how in the postgame interview Abby seemed near tears, she was so choked with emotion. And how she talked about playing for this country. I felt so proud and patriotic. I’m such a sap.

Poetic justice, indeed! However, this game was another sad reminder of the incredible need for better female refs. If the penalty was justified, the red card in a game of this importance was excessive. The ref only compounded her error by forcing a retake of the missed penalty … showing her true partiality. It would take a microscope to show that the US player invaded the penalty box before Marta took her first kick.

The second goal of Brazil ignored a clear offside of the passing player. The equalizer coming so late in the game precluded the ref from further influencing the outcome.

Great victory for the USA. Hopefully the FIFA can find one set of impartial and competent refs for the final game, as hard as that seems to be.

So happy!!! Our girls are pretty amazing!!! I love, love, love Hope and Abby!!!

What is the effect of the red card going forward from this point?

Buehler can’t play in the next game, but we can still field 11, right? The yellows are wiped clean.

xiggi, there is no rule that only women can officiate the women’s World Cup, right? A comment made during the game was odd to me and sounded like they were blaming the officiating on it being an all-female crew. If these officials aren’t up to the task, find someone who is.

It was wonderful to see the crowd boo that “Erica-on-stretcher” stunt. I think the crowd support helped them. So sad that our men never get such fan support.

Great result! Glad they don’t have to play again until Wednesday. I’m sure today took a lot out of them.

I don’t know about the selection rules for refs at the WC. However, it is a fact that the absence of high level competition does not help all-female crews to gain the necessary experience. A WC should be fielded by the very best refs who officiate at this level all year long. Unfortunately, politics at the men’s WC precludes that as incompetent (and at times corrupt) refs have been selected. It seems that deciding to field a male crew at the WC Women Soccer would not be too popular, despite the fact that few of the women refs seem to possess the experience and athleticism to officiate at this level.

Our team will be able to have eleven on the field :)

Great game.

What a silly argument about all female refs. Has everyone forgotten the mistakes made during the men’s matches during the WC? Cost the US plenty.

It’s just an old system, and a faster game than it used to be. However, if anyone can recall the special treatment Michael Jordan used to recieve, nobody will be surprised by the way the refs favor Marta. It’s a hazard in all games with true stars, and it happens at every level of competition in every sport. Male or female officiating.

Now, we just need to beat France.

That’s the thing. I don’t care who refs, men or women, but the way the phrase was worded made it sound to me like the commentator was saying the problems lied with an inexperienced, all-female officiating squad when I’m not sure that’s what she really meant. I’m just surprised that they’d let “inexperienced” refs, male or female, officiate at this highest level. That’s why I wondered whether men COULD ref these games if the feeling is that having someone more experienced would help.

Whatever. My blood pressure has recovered. Onward to France.

All I can say is that the US is lucky Canada is out
