check out The U dvd on Ivy leagues, you can judge for yourself which is the worst/best

Didn’t see that one. The original posting said 1939 Rose Bowl, so I guess I was focused on that one. I have heard of Sid Luckman, although wouldn’t have known he went to Columbia. I guess I also wouldn’t expect to see Columbia since I think they have the most losses all time in college football.

…wow… this thread simply amazes me…

To see a few of the country’s brightest and most promising individuals degrade top schools is simply… well, you guys get the idea.

How can there be a worst one? If I had to pick I’d say Penn.

Job Placement

Harvard

Princeton

Yale

Penn

Columbia

Dartmouth

Brown

Cornell

Humanities Reputations:
- Harvard
- Yale
- Princeton
- Columbia
- Brown
- Penn
- Dartmouth
- Cornell

National Prestige
- Harvard
- Princeton/Yale
- Columbia
- Brown
- Penn (people who are smart put Penn with Brown, but the average person thinks it is the same thing as like University of Alabama, unfortunately)
- Dartmouth
- Cornell

It’s very clear, essentially, that there are three tiers of the Ivy League:

HARVARD Princeton Yale

Columbia Penn Brown

Dartmouth Cornell

Why does everyone keep picking Penn when it is ranked by US News higher than Stanford, Duke, MIT and every other school but HYP? Are you all mad?

US News doesn’t know it’s arse from its elbow.

I say that Cornell doesn’t rank up to the other Ivies. It’s kind of like the geeky friend of all the cool kids who is tolerated only because they all grew up together. But KUDOS if you’re accepted to any Ivy, since honestly, college is all politics and no one gives a damn about how GOOD some Community College’s programs are, really, people just care about something’s reputation. And since an Ivy’s and Ivy, well…that’s a good thing!

I mean, of course, Cornell has a lower rep than, say, Harvard, but Cornell still has a good one.

In terms of undergraduate program
Harvard

Actually, Cornell is the best in terms of diveristy and specialiation in the skills it offer to undergraduate students. It has a wide range of different schools. It is also probably one of the nicest campuses in on the Northeast (where most of the Ivies are). Cornell also has wordclass ice cream-so I hear.

Cornell has incredible ice cream, made right on campus from locally made ingredients. But, Cornell also has the best food of any ivy.

by a show of hands, how many people here are actually going to college next year?
how many people applied to ivy schools this year and were accepted?

I would recommend Brown for Guru because, in my opinion, it has more character than UPenn. I visited UPenn once, and it was intimidating in a stale, overly-confident, prestige-driven kind of way, underlined by the fact that it’s known firstly for its business school. At Brown, on the other hand, there wasn’t any intimidation. My friend who went there said that people there are confident in an academic, not-afraid-to-raise-your-hand-in-class sort of way; but they’re not prestige-driven, not full of self-importance. I don’t know which school excels in welfare economics, but generally speaking, Brown is known as a more free-thinking school, more creative, more interdisciplinary (as someone else already commented), more liberal–all of which are likely to be prestigious qualities in the field of welfare economics. That said, even if you’re not liberal (I don’t know how that translates into your country’s politcal lingo…did you say where you’re from?), Brown students are laid back in a way that other notably liberal colleges may not be. There is no holier-than-thou attitude. Good luck wherever you go.

Mboyle, I have no idea how you came up with your lists. I have attended two Ivies, recruited at Ivies, etc. Dartmouth is at the top of the non-HYPS pile in most categories in terms of job recruiting (look at the lists from the top 5 banks and Consulting firm - D dominates) for example.

Here’s the real list:

Job Placement (based on vault recruiting lists and percentage of grads at Top MBAs)

Harvard

Princeton

Yale

Dartmouth

Columbia

Penn

Brown

Cornell

Humanities Reputations: (for what, grad school? In terms of education for UNDERGRADS)
- Princeton
- Yale
- Dartmouth
- Brown
- Columbia
- Penn
- Harvard
- Cornell
- Cornell

Prestige (Based on what people who will effect your life think)
- Harvard
- Princeton/Yale
- Columbia/ Brown/ Dartmouth/ Penn
- Cornell

National Prestige (Based on what your mom’s friends think)
- Who cares

It’s very clear, essentially, that there aren’t three tiers of the Ivy League as you have defined them.

I believe the order is:

HYP

Cornell/Penn

Columbia

Brown/ Dartmouth

I have no idea which one is the worst but as far as international fame (I do not live in the USA) I would say it goes like this

1st: Harvard, Yale and Princeton
2nd: Columbia, Penn (If you actuall call it University of Pennsylvania some people do not know you are talking about the same school!!!)
3rd: Cornell, Darthmouth and Brown

hey… i have a similar problem choosing a college.
please come help at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=181304
its the “help me choose!! brown vs penn” thread.
only a few days left and im going insane…

There are also a few schools that would be more famous internationaly than some ivies such as Stanford, Berkely, UCLA and maybe even Penn State and NYU

Forgot about MIT. Caltech really isen’t that famous abroad and outisde the sciences/engenering world.

I jsut have to say that Brown is amazing! It’s ranked #3 (ahead of all other Ivy League schools) by Princeton Review for happiest students, which is really THE most important thing above prestige and all that. Go Brown!

cornell…from what i hear…is a bit stressful (bit being an understatement) i hear, dunno if rumor or not, they have a specific bridge with like a deep ravine that many people jump off…kinda scary o.O
