Ok, I’m starting this cause the Harvard forum tends to screw up any thread that can turn into a double-sided argument on a controversial college admissions practice.

In the age of ‘holistic admissions’ practices, the term ‘worst’ carries a light meaning. Taking this into account, any stories out there of people who were mediocre in any part of their application but got in? Since we’re talking statistics, GPA and SAT/ACT scores are the focus, but any other part could be fine.

Just doing this to ease the countdown for the applicants (I’m a junior) and (yes, I’m going there!) to make myself feel good.

RULES

You can mention certain ‘hooks’ if you seriously think those aspects helped the person get in (i.e. athlete, legacy, URM, socioeconomic background).

You can turn this into a lighthearted and comical discussion on the crapshoot that is Ivy admissions.

You cannot turn this into an argument like the one seen [thread=466999]here[/thread].

You cannot mention Jian Li. Just thought that should be its own rule.

Public school. These are LOWEST admits, which is what you asked for. The AVERAGE admitted is 4.6 for both RD and Early with SAT 2100 RD and 2260 Early.

Harvard accepts 18% of applicants from the school–compare that to Yale’s rate!

The only story I can give is some one with a 2050 who got into Brown, then chose to go to UC Santa Barbara instead. Gotta love those party schools, whether or not they have the highest STD rate of all of the nation’s schools…

hey financial aid may have played a part in the example above… theres a lot more than stats that count towards admissions, rite? (or so i hope…)

do you think a 3.7UW, 2200 will get me through the door for concideration? fresh and soph years spent in very competitive school in singapore, then moved to california…

Your ECs and essays will be the deciding factor, cause those grades are solid. Then again, the same can be said of most of the applicants.

(sarcastic voice) C’mon man, you’re taking up space on this thread! We want to hear about over-enthusiastic underachievers, not under-enthusiastic overachievers!

I meant that in a snarky way… mostly I just meant to convey how annoying and off-topic this thread has gotten on the Harvard forum.
On that note: back on topic!

Worst SATs you’ve heard of being admitted to Yale?

When I was there, the admissions officer told us one of those urban legends about a guy who was let into Princeton with 200 across the board… but I doubt the validity of that, even coming from a Yale admissions guy.

I didn’t this you were serious, but then I checked. Oh well, we all say things like that sometimes.

Apology accepted. However, the idea of anyone getting into Stanford with a 1700 is quite a thought to behold.

Even if it was more truth than legend, Princeton would never let such a secret leak out easily. Either he was an All-American linebacker, or Woodrow Wilson’s great-grandson. You take your pick.
