Worthwhile Short Stops Along I-76, Ohio to New Jersey

Son has an EZpass thingy on his car - our car is registered under his, so we can use his when he is home, but we don’t have one in our car presently…

We took the PATH train in Newark about 3 years ago and the fare was $15. We picked up the PATH at the airport. It wasn’t bad but there was a lot of traffic to get to the expressway

D’s boyfriend from New Jersey says Secaucus is the easier route.

abasket, if you’re on the PA turnpike, it crosses the Delaware River into NJ and goes straight to the NJ turnpike. Easy peasy. You’ll be nowhere near Philly.

It’s weird to me because in Ohio, I-80 is the turnpike - so I keep wanting to call 80 in PA the turnpike! I believe I’m going to take 80 in Ohio to 76 at the Ohio/Pa border and right into Jersey - it appears to be faster time wise according to Mapquest and faster will be good on the way there.

Is 76 going to be at least 2 lanes traveling the same direction across PA?

Yes 76 is at least two lanes. And easy if you take it to jersey.

I agree that Philly premium outlets are better than Franklin mills. FM is not a bad area, just not as nice. But king of Prussia mall is easier to get to and better!

From NE Ohio, I would take I-80 to I-476 to I-76 to I-676 to US 30 into Cherry Hill. 76 is an awful road. There’s not much to see along the interstates in PA and it’s tough to find food.

If you need a place to stay in Cherry Hill, I would recommend the Residence Inn. Stayed there before for south Jersey swim meets and it’s nice. Be advised that it’s a different layout than most - the rooms are townhouse like and the checkin/breakfast area is a separate building.

Also, NJ has no sales tax on clothes and there are several large malls in the Cherry Hill area. Also a great Container Store there.

I don’t know when you will be going through Philly area on I-76. Most of the time it moves and it is the most direct way to Cherry Hill since Cherry Hill is just right outside of Philly. People complain about I76 in PA because it is curvy and people drive fast. Just don’t lose your nerve  I am not sure any detour is saving much time. 676 can also be slow. I am thinking you are taking 676 from 76 to cross BF bridge?

Mostly I’m going to get on 76 and do what OnStar tells me. :)

I booked a hotel on Hotwire yesterday - it seems to be right between the funeral home and the church on Marlton Pike so we are good there.

We probably will be in the Philly area unfortunately around 5-6pm. :frowning: Not sure how to avoid that because of the 8.5 hours + stops leaving from NW Ohio. And we’d like to make the funeral hour visitation that evening.

NJ, awful as in boring or awful as in a physically bad road???

The turnpike isn’t that horribly kept and it’s not the most boring road in the country (I-80 in Nevada or the roads through Arizona and Texas have to win that award). The hardest part for me was the speed limit of 55 along some regions and the somewhat vigilant state patrol.

76 can be a pretty drive if it’s your first time and you can appreciate what you get. Some of the river crossings are quite nice, as well as the vistas you get from the sides of various mountains in the Appalachians. It’s no Route 1, but there are plenty of worse stretches of country.

Listen, where we are is FLAT and uninspiring - it won’t take much to entertain us. :)

My Mapquest (which it seems ONStar often follows) has us taking 80 to 76 in PA and then merging onto 676/US 30 crossing into Jersey. Then 30E to Cherry Hill.

Thanks SO much for all your assistance - this place is always amazing!!!

The PA Turnpike (aka 76) is a very old road. I haven’t driven in it several years, but in some areas, it was 2 lanes in each direction with just a concrete divider in the middle. It was a bit claustrophobic to me, especially with trucks. I also found it fairly hilly w lots of curves.

Just wanted to share that we returned safely and besides getting tired of shelling out tolls, 76 was a great ride - enjoyed the mountains, the mountain tunnels and the view of Philly as we drove through ( D loved the crew boathouses along the river - cool!) no problems at all besides the fact that Onstar kept losing us in the mountain tunnels and we had to “recalculate”. As it turned out, we ended up spending more time with family than we thought so we. Didn’t have time for side trips - a little disappointing.

Thanks for all your tips and assistance - it really helped my confidence!

RR isn’t kidding. If you have lead foot be extra cautious on I76 and keep within 10 mph over.

Depending on where you’re going in NJ, it’s possible you may get off the turnpike at I81 and get into NJ on I78. Gas may be as much as 20 cents cheaper in the station when you get off the turnpike than in the ones on it.
