Does U Chicago RIBS (Research in Bio Sciences) fall in the suspicious category because of cost?

What is the cost? I checked their website, but I couldn’t find it. Almost every college offers these science research program, so I guess that RIBS is not necessarily “suspicious”, but instead, it’s just tiresome to list each and every college opportunity. I know Penn offers a pretty “selective” summer research program that has gotten alot of positive reviews. But the price is over $5,000. If you really want to do research over the summer, it might just be better to contact a college professor and see if you can work something out. But that doesn’t always work out, so hence, the summer college research programs that people pay big bucks to go to. I’ve heard alot of great things about these programs though, so I’m sure that the experience itself is rewarding despite the heavy pricetag that comes along with it.
I think we all know that free usually equates to prestigious. But not all of us can get into RSI, or MITES so alot of people choose to pay money to research at a college laboratory.

I’ve tried to exclude programs that cost >$1000 a week all-inclusive, although some of the more well-known math/science programs above may fall outside that limit (they usually offer generous need-based financial aid).

Free programs are more impressive, IMO.

Most of these seem to be minority programs. Are there any free programs that do not require minority status to be admitted?

Carnegie Mellon SAMS, Cornell NBTC, ISSI in Israel, and House/Senate Pages are all free. And of course the big two–RSI and TASP.

It costs $5.5 K for tution alone for 4 weeks

PA-C,
Alot of programs focus on minoirties, but with some of them, you do not nessecarily have to be a minority to participate. While TASS is african american focused, you do NOT have to be a minority to apply or to be accepted. I am not a minority and I am going to TASS this year. Not being a minoirty doesn’t hurt your chances of acceptance.

Bara - Are you low-income or otherwise disadvantaged? I feel like TASS is intended for the “underrepresented,” which can be more than just race.

I am not, although I know that alot of TASS spots go to “underrepresented” applicants, I think that the whole idea of TASS, and really any Telluride program, is to get a group of like minded, but very diverse, people together, not necessarily all “underrepresented.” Naturally quite a few Telluride spots go to applicants who qualify as disadvataged or as minorities simply because Telluride wants diversity.

In terms of spots going to “underrepresented” applicants, does anyone know what percentage of TASP acceptances go to members of a minority? And if this theory about “underrepresented” acceptance is correct won’t it backfire so that there will not be enough “normal” people (aka majorities, the wealthy etc.) in these programs and that would be an injustice the other way.

That made a lot of sense in my head… hope I conveyed my message clearly.

How the hell do people afford SUMaC?

In my opinion, the free programs – like TASS, SAMS, Gov School, etc. – carry a little more prestige.

Just FYI, joshcato, SUMaC has generous financial aid to enable qualified candidates to attend. The availability of financial aid is made clear on the SUMaC website. The program is funded by the Howard Hughes Foundation and by the Stanford Math department. The stated tuition is for those who qualify for the program but don’t require financial aid to attend.

I’m a parent, and my son was accepted into the Carnegie Mellon SAMS program this summer as an incoming junior. Has anyone here attended their program? Or, is anyone here attending this summer? We’re just looking for some insight as to what to expect. Thanks.

^Just for future reference, it might be more beneficial (for both you and the readers of this thread) to make a new thread or search the forum for an existing thread such as http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/277452-carnegie-mellon-summer-programs-diversity.html?highlight=carnegie+sams</a>
This thread is lengthy, but it might contain some good info.

I understood the point of TASS was to get more “underrepresented”/minority people involved in TASP which was mostly all wealthy/non-minority people at some point in time… I could be wrong, but I think I read that somwhere on wikipedia or somewhere when I was googling.

Thank you very much for this. It helped me a lot.
