You hear this refrain about Vanderbilt being very “Southern” and not appealing to Northerners, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard it from anyone who actually attends the school. I suppose you could hear that if you asked enough students and alumni, but there are always people unhappy at a given school, and this would just be something convenient to hang their hat on. Half the students are not from the South, and it has been that way for many years. What are all these non-Southerners doing while at Vandy, crawling under a rock and being miserable? I think not. One thing to note. Vanderbilt has always been a popular choice among the small but successful Jewish communities in Southern cities. Nashville has always had a close knit Jewish community.
