Would these classes be a smooth transition?

If necessary you could replace AP CS Principles with your required Art/Music (performance or appreciation) class and keep CS Principles for 11th grade.

How did the meeting with the GC go?

It went good, The classes that I am taking in sophomore year are:

AP World history/cul
AP computer science principles
Int math 3 honors (IM2 will be taken over summer)
Chemistry Honors
English Honors
PE 2

I will be meeting my spanish requirement by taking dual enrollment courses of spanish the summer before junior and before senior year.

How did that schedule happen, with Spanish as summer classes only rather than PE? :grimacing:
Good luck in any case
(Backtrack and read the thread again: it’s definitely suboptimal).

I think PE during the summer is a better idea than FL.

I agree and OP agreed too, so curious to know whether the school or the GC changed it?

It’s possible there may also have been a scheduling issue that would prevent all the desired classes from being taken together.

You will need to have a plan to maintain your language skills during that significant break (an entire year!). I hope you have some speakers to practice with (regularly!) during that time.

Spanish1 is such a low level that there’s no conversational capability nor autonomous linguistic manipulation. He can watch tv shows in Spanish like Casa de Papel with English subtitles to get his ear to pick up sounds and turn them into occasional chunks of meaning but because he’s so far from the autonomy threshold he wouldn’t be able to understand even with Spanish subtitles nor modelize&learn from watching.
He’ll probably need to be watching Spanish language TV every week+registering for non credit Spanish during the year, otherwise it’s going to be hard to dig himself out between the time lapse and the compressed nature of summer courses. :grimacing:

Is taking a break from Spanish for a year a bad idea?
I mean 5 of the classes I choose besides computer science principles were already chosen for me, those are my core classes and I have to take them which leaves an elective, the only problem is I am in exploring cs principle right now and that is the prese quite for cs principles, so like I kind of have to take it.

I have been to three high schools my freshmen year, two of those in different districts and the district that I am coming from has a completely different approach to ap and honors classes, hopefully that I can survive the one year break.

Yes. You will forget A LOT if you go a full year between language classes with no practice and, since summer is short as it is, by the time you catch back up, the class will be over. This could go very badly for you, unless you have a solid plan in place for language maintenance during the academic year in between language classes. If you are determined to do it this way, then see if you can take an afterschool Spanish class or something to help you remember things. You will need to work at it during the year so you do not forget everything and can rejoin the class in the summer without starting all over again.

Foreign language should also be considered a core class. To many if not most colleges, it is not viewed as an elective. It is viewed as one of your cores.

I agree, most colleges will want to see at least 3 years of Spanish year-long classes, so I would definitely not recommend doing a summer or skip a year of spanish.

CS classes are electives. They aren’t a required part of the high school curriculum, even if you end up wanting to major in computer science. It’s fine to take CS electives if you have room in your schedule, but it’s also fine if you take them only in the summer, or simply pick up the material outside of school (as many kids do).

If I were you, I would either take an online computer science class or a DE after school so you can take Spanish during the school year

This sounds like it might have been difficult!

Is that one of the reasons that you are nervous about the transition and next year’s workload? Do you feel that having so many changes may have affected how much you could learn this year?

Is there any way you can take PE over the summer instead of Spanish ?

If you school doesn’t offer PE during the summer then wait until junior year to take PE during the summer, is this an option for you? At my school, PE wasn’t offered during the summer but it will be next year so I am waiting until next year to finish my PE requirement.

Okay, I am going to switch out PE for spanish, and take Spanish 2 instead of PE next year. I don’t know what I was thinking.

But with the spanish would these classes be a smooth transition?
I am taking all non honors and ap and next year I am going to take literally all honors and AP classes.

It will be hard but you can always drop down if you feel you’re in over your head in AP classes -check with your GC to see what would happen if you found you’d taken on more than you can chew.
DO give yourself a chance to see how you respond to the challenge. It sounds like you WANT to be challenged and know it’s not going to as as easy as 9th grade but are ready to do what it takes. Is that right?

Yes, I am willing to do anything and everything possible to get into a good university.
