Would you ask a friend for help in a job search

^^ sorghum, you seem incapable or unwilling to understand that business colleagues can also become friends.
And can be a great resource for identifying potentially good hires .

Just because the referral comes from a friend doesn’t mean it is tainted.
Perhaps you were burned in the past by someone who didn’t refer you for a position?
you seem to be quite bitter and angry about this topic.

Sorghum, the hiring manager still has the ability to say no. That’s what you’re not getting.

I don’t see the difference between asking someone you might know to put in a good word and kid using a school’s alum network for help in gaining employment. One of the questions asked a lot on CC is how good the alum network of X college is. Alums aid in getting interviews/jobs all the time.

Exactly. There are plenty of people who would go to bat for someone because, hey, he went to Notre Dame and I did too. What’s the difference?

Some on here are deliberately ignoring the difference between “I’ll take a second look, thanks” and “you VILL hire this person, I said so and that’s that.”

Re: coaching for interviews. College “professional development” offices do it all the time! Mock interviews, networking receptions, etc. there is nothing wrong in that.
