When I had one shattered leg and one with “just” a crack, I spent the first ten weeks or so downstairs. But eventually learned to do the scoot on the butt up the stairs–had an OT who came to the house and taught me all the tricks. My “good” leg healed after the first couple of months–I was able to put weight on it–it hurt but the pressure wouldn’t damage it (just a crack at the top of the fibula. )
I first got around mostly with a walker. Gradually learned crutches. Eventually got the hang of crutches up and down stairs–still remember the mantra–the good go up to Heaven, the bad go down to Hell–to remember which leg to lead with. The bad one always moved with the crutches as I couldn’t put wait on it till the big gap in the bone filled in–took about eight months. had to wear an electronic stimulator to try to get it to grow faster. Eventually moved to one crutch, then a cane. Finally healed up in about a year.
But that was when I was 38, would hate to have to try it all now!
