Would you buy your child a macbook?

We bought our son a Macbook for graduation because he was going to be a journalism major and they used a Mac to put out the high school newspaper. We also toured the physics dept. at IU and the labs all had Macs, and the professor giving the tour said he’d never do his work on a PC.

The only glitch was when my son took a cartography course–why?I don’t know—and that work was all done on pcs and so he had to convert his work and it was a hassle. I think each has their advantages depending on your field of study, so I’d consider that when making a decision

On my Mac Mini (Intel version, 10.5.6 Mac OS version at that time), when I tried to set up Apple’s Mail client to hook up with my mail account at Yahoo/SBCGLOBAL mail server, I did not succeed because Yahoo/SBCGLOABL insists that I have to use some secure link (SSL) and I could not locate the place to set that up. I did not try very hard though.

Since I use Thunderbird on the other PC (not Mac), I downloaded and installed Thunderbird on the Mac Mini.

I think I should have switched to a web-based email like gmail like my child does a long time ago. I wonder whether anybody still prefers to use the client-based emailer like Mail, Thunderbird, etc. (and Outlook on PC). In my family, the kid uses the better one (Macbook), and the parents use the cheaper ones (Compaq PC, Mac Mini). You can say we are spoiling our kid!
