Would you go to Berkeley or Boston College?

I still can’t understand how one can compare berkeley and Boston college…Berkeley is in another level don’t be stupid

Who said I was? When have I demonstrated that I am? I think it’s a reasonably good metric in some cases, but otherwise, I think it’s flawed. I’ve said this on multiple occasions. I suppose that any reference to it makes me a “huge fan,” though…

Because we can simply look at the actual figures and get a clearer idea of what’s going on.

UCLA

Average admitted GPA: 4.26
Average SAT: 2004

Cal

Average admitted GPA: 4.26
Average SAT: (only ranges are given)
Reading: 580-710
Math: 620-740
Writing: 590-710

Statistically, Cal’s SAT scores are about the same, somewhere around the 2000 range.

Again, I don’t think that Cal is significantly more competitive than UCLA.

Let’s look at Boston College. I couldn’t find the average GPA, but they did say on their admission page that the average SAT “ranged from 1900 to 2100 on the SAT.” Not too different from Cal or UCLA.

You could say that about a comparison between Berkeley and Pomona. Who cares? I got told that when I chose UCLA over Cal, and I still don’t regret my decision. These are very personal decisions, and sometimes things other than prestige come into play. Let’s not be derisive of a choice that’s already hard enough…

WUSTL. What school is this?

washington university in St Lous

“People will assume you are Catholic”

Even IF that were true, that would be the end of your life?

“Berkeley by a wide, wide margin even with OOS tuition. It’s not even close.”

Yeah, US News’ #21 vs. #34. They’re not even in the same galaxy, I suppose.

No, it wouldn’t be the end of your life, but if it matters to you (and to some, it does), then it wouldn’t be a good choice. Also, some people continue to be prejudiced against those who are of a different religion.

For many people, religion is a private matter that they don’t want to bring into the work force. A degree from Boston College carries many assumptions about religion - and that could be good, bad, or neutral, depending on the situation.

Boston College would be my choice despite USNews ranking…

Smaller, more cohesive student body.

Momwaitingforfew, thanks for bringing up that I can still apply to some LAC’s. Haverford sounds very attractive for me. However, for me to apply, I need to write an essay. I’ll see what I can do.

Out of the schools in this thread, I also applied to Dartmouth and Duke, but those are reaches so I’m not counting on getting in.

Some great input here.

I’m not judging Berkeley or BC according to their rankings, but on what I’m looking for in a college, at least at this point. BC is a match academically for me, and it looks attractive as a top college and with its strong academics. I want to get out for college and experience new things, which is why I’m considering BC. But Berkeley has been my dream school for awhile, but now, it s just another choice for me because I’ve done my research.

lhDCpage06,

I think you need to consider drawing up a personal list of positives and negatives for both programs. Try to see what you think you like and dislike about both.

In the end, you should go to wherever you think will benefit you the most in the short- and long-run.
