Writing Seminar

Freshman seminars are offered in the fall and the spring. And I have no idea percentage-wise how many do one, not that it should matter. If you see some you’re interested in, apply for them. And as I said at the end of the last post, yes, they can both be taken in the same semester.

A freshman seminar is like any other class–it can be on any topic and you don’t have to take it, or you can take it both semesters. It’s basically like taking a normal history (or english or sociology, etc) class, except it’s restricted to freshman and it’s small because they want you to get the feel of the seminar-style classroom that usually only juniors and seniors experience.

My D loved her freshman seminar. It was on Hamlet. The professor invited all the kids to dinner at his house when it was over. The class was really run like a 400 level course in terms of the approach to the material. It also helped her understand that she didn’t want to be an English major  because English in college is not about the emotional response to a text so much as it is about the text as an object with a multi-faceted existence. Sorry to be so big-wordy but I figure the Princeton hopefuls are up to it;).
