Yeah, I really don’t see the journalistic value the YDN saw in that editorial. I’m thinking it’s not real, but on the off-chance it is, what a lack of discretion…

I thought the comment on the YDN regarding that article was spot-on.

^^^ Yes, Why didnt someone on the YDN staff connect that article w/ Membis expressing her desire to be a role model for young girls of color when competing in the Miss Black America, Connecticut pageant. Did they fail to see the irony??

This student and her behavior is disappointing on so many levels…

This whole situation befuddles me. And if I wasn’t befuddled enough, then I came upon the Sugar Daddy article. Her resume is too good to be true, so I am also curious what causes someone with talent or at least potential to start on the path of making up information or creating white lies even about themselves. Is she a chronic liar or is there a mental issues? Is it from the way she was brought up? Is she content to live in a fantasy world and if so, does her self esteem really exist?

My hunch is that she thinks everyone does this, that this is what people do.

I think she thought she was above the article she got busted for. And she was lazy. And she wasn’t willing to prove herself. She thought she didn’t need do simple stories and get tested. As if starting out at the bottom was not fair to her. She wanted more excting stories to cover.

How sad.

Maybe it’s the Nigerian connection… :)

Some writers apparently don’t appreciate the difference between factual reporting and creative writing, but given what we are exposed to every day on TV news I can understand the confusion.

FYI:

The Yale Daily News has completed their investigation of Membis’ writing for them.
