Just voted – all good choices! (As @ignatius mentioned, I did read and enjoy “The Bird Hotel” for a RL Book Club.) I’ve never read “Persuasion,” or anything by Georgette Heyer, so if that’s how the vote turns out, I’m good!
Georgette who? have never read any of her books, and given all the love here, excited to read, if chosen
I’m another who hasn’t read Persuasion or anything by Heyer.
I’m choosing not to vote as I’ll be content with any book chosen. Leaving it to those who feel strongly one way or another.
And may I just add … excellent job, @Mary13
I voted too! It looks like a strong consensus is emerging.
PS, the second quarter of The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane is quite distressing. Definitely not a recommendation for Happy Month.
I read Shanghai Girls and Dreams of Joy by Lisa See. Neither would be a recommendation for Happy Month.
How does one see the current results of voting?
This is the link to see the voting in action. Results are still in progress … Last time, we had 21 voters, and right now we are at 14:
(But the duet is ahead – and by way more than a nose. )
A nice thing about the Duet (if it is chosen), is that there are many places to access both books at no charge. Gutenberg and other places have both free! Anyway, can’t wait to see what the final choice is!
I am excited for the Persuasion duet! Persuasion actually is my very favorite Austen novel
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a really good read I recently enjoyed.
Someone upthread also mentioned The Frozen River. I read that a few months ago and really enjoyed it too. Very interesting, especially in light of the author’s notes.
I don’t know how I’ve missed this gem of a CC book club but I’m so excited and ALL IN
I’ve never actually read Persuasion or anything by Austin. I’m not positive whether I’ve read A Civil Contract or not–after awhile, some of the stories & characters run together in my mind. I do know I mostly love Heyer! (I do andmit sometimes the mysteries and ones with more history a war don’t appeal to me as much.)
Welcome to the book group! It is the main reason I am still on CC after all these years, when my lil bird has flown the nest.
Welcome to the best book club ever. @Mary13 started it in 2009. I’ve been hanging around since the beginning (almost). I’ll see if @Mary13 will list the books we’ve read and discussed. It’s impressive.
I’ve only been in the book club a few years, but is has definitely been illuminating to me, to read and discuss books I might never had tried and learned about authors I have also never tried. I hope you like this book club as much as the rest of us. @Mary13 has done a remarkable job of keeping us together and on track.
One of the things that really helps me finish a book that I may find challenging (Wuthering Heights, yes, YOU!) is that I know I will enjoy and understand the discussion better if I finish the book, even if it’s not as enjoyable as I might prefer.
Yes, we’ve been doing this for almost 16 years. Hard to believe! I’m grateful for old members and new – we always have a good time, regardless of the quality or popularity of the book.
As for April, Persuasion and A Civil Contract is the clear winner, with 16 voters overall. I’ll start a new thread.
@southernfemmom, we meet every other month: February, April, June, August, October and December. Discussion always begins on the 1st.
If you do a CC search with the words “CC Book Club Selection,” you can find many of our past choices. They can still be fun to go back to if you read the book later and miss the original discussion. I think @AnAsmom has done that.
We have read over 100 books together – too many to list in a post. At some point, I’ll figure out how to link to a shared Google doc or something.
FYI, We did at least one duet every year for a long time, but the last one was in 2021, so I’m glad to see it make a comeback.
An easy way to see all the books is to click on Mary13’s profile, then Activity, then Threads. I think all of them are book club threads. I dipped in during 2016 with Seveneves, then came back with Pride and Prejudice in 2018. Then back with Spinning Silver in 2019. Then most books going forward and have enjoyed so many books I never would otherwise have read. I’ve also read a ton of books that were suggested but didn’t get chosen for discussion.
Here’s a list Mary did in 2020:
Thanks, @Marilyn. Good idea – I didn’t think about clicking on my profile. Yes, they are all book club threads, since my kids are long out of college.
I’ve also found great books through our lists of nominees. But I tend to collect books faster than I can read them! The other day I watched one of Ann Patchett’s “New to You” videos (about slightly older books you might have missed along the way). She was recommending Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively and I thought, “That sounds good.” I went to Amazon, searched for the book, and up came the message: “You purchased a Kindle edition on February 28, 2015.” Who knew? Thank you, past self. So many books, so little time!
On that score, what is everybody reading in the interim?
@mathmom has recommended Penelope Lively more than once and, maybe, Moon Tiger specifically.
I’m re-reading “Braiding Sweetgrass” for a church/earthcare book discussion group. It’s a series of interesting essays.
This time it’s even more fun because I know a student who really enjoyed this author as a professor at her Syracuse/SUNY forestry classes.
