Yacht Club

We have our boat in a marina, and we actually have a members only “Yacht Club” at our marina. For dinner, jackets are not required, but they are very typical. Most men in the 30-50 year old set wear light colored jackets, usually silk or linen in the summer. Navy or black in the winter. Those jackets are paired with darker slacks, sometimes a really nice dark dress jean (our club allows dress denim Memorial Day-Labor Day only) and either a polo or button down…never a tie is summer. Always loafers with NO socks and never “boat” shoes.

Ladies are a mixed bag. I typically will wear white linen pants, and a bright linen twin set or a nice dress paired with sandals. I do wear pearls, because I love them, but not because I think they are required.

With all this said, dinner at our “Yacht Club” is your typical white table cloth, white napkin kind of place. Great service, great food, always fun. Finding out the dress code does not always reflect the culture of the club. It is never beyond me to call a club I am not familiar with and ask a host what a typical member would wear to dinner.

Obviously the institutions referred to by the appellation “yatch club” are far from homogeneous. Call the “club” as recommended above.

Men are almost always safe with the classic khakis, buttondown, and blazer (linen or silk in the summer), with loafers and a tie in the pocket just in case.

Women are also safe with a classic, attractive summer dress or nice linen pants and a nice, moderately dressy top/jacket or skirt and similar top/jacket, any of them with pearls or some kind of nice but non-flashy jewelry. (This isn’t the time to break out the diamond parure. )

If in doubt, I would also recommend calling the club.

BTW - don’t sweat it. Just relax and have fun. You’re not meeting the queen, despite what the members might think.

FYI - Stay away from the fruity, rum drinks. They are usually killer!

Me too, missypie. (Which reminds me I haven’t stopped by the DISboards in a while. :p)

I’d never wear black to a summer event at a yacht club even in the northeast. I like the idea of white pants and dressy top or a nice summer dress. I do think calling or checking the website is the best bet though.
