Yale 2015 SCEA Hopefuls

I don’t consider marching band a sport. It’s certainly a time-consuming activity, but I just don’t consider it a sport

No one is arguing that it is not challenging, it just simply isn’t a sport. There are many, many things that are physically demanding and intensely competitive that aren’t sports. In any case, no DI school has “Marching Band” listed as a Varsity sports team, and I’m pretty sure Title IX does no define Marching Band as a sport.

I didn’t see that qualification in your definition.

it is a subjective competition that involves physical and musical competence. it may not be a traditional ‘sport’, but I think it is comparable

Well, I’ve always felt that golf was more of a lawn game than a sport…

You guys will never reach a consensus on this.

Haha, agreed. I feel as if I probably shouldn’t have brought up the whole “cross country isn’t a sport” issue… :stuck_out_tongue: But some interesting conversation is coming out of it haha.

@Owlehn, I’m a girl, and my times are like… in the 23s by the end of the season. Definitely not the fastest, but I don’t run to be faster than my teammates but to be faster than myself. (:

Marching band is an athletic activity that requires physical endurance, precision, and all different levels of awareness. And there is most definitely a competitive aspect to it - if you’ve ever watched BoA or UIL State you’d see how much time kids put into a show. So I think it has all the elements of a sport. But it’s also got the musical aspect to it. So I guess it depends on whether or not you consider dance a sport or an art form. There’s no denying the athletic requisites, though.

Has anyone seen the film Drumline?

They look pretty athletic to me.

Am I wrong or do the arguments about what is a sport just get more and more illogical as time goes by? A SPORT has to have an athletic aspect to it and carrying a tuba for an hour and walking down a field hardly qualifies as athletic… So just get over yourself whoever came up with this ridiculous idea.

@ccuser
Have you ever seen real band drummers in your high school band? They look nothing like Nick Cannon and his cinematic drum moves…

The kids on my high school baseball team also look nothing like Alex Rodriguez…

You’re mistaking athletic with physical. Yes it’s a physical activity and it has physical requisites, but no, it is not a sport.

Well then how do you distinguish athletic from physical?

Also, I consider marching band to be a musical form over an athletic activity, because the members are musicians first and then marchers. If you took out the music, it would just be a bunch of kids walking around on a field, which would look cool but mean absolutely nothing. So I guess I shouldn’t’ve said marching band was a sport. But it doesn’t really matter, because it’s an athletic activity in the manner that dance is.

Also also, as someone who comes from one of the best high school drumlines in the nation, the movie Drumline is kind of insulting. :/

^ I consider athletic ability/activity to refer exclusively to ability in sports as defined by Title IX and/or the general consensus of colleges/high schools/the professional sporting world. Plainly put, marching band is not a sport.

lol I’m sorry for bringing this up! anyways… Yale…

:)

fgsfds what school do you go to? I’ve probably competed against you at some point in the last four years if you go to a 5A school

Yes, I realize this…

Hahaha seems like many people are quite passionate over this issue…:P

Hmmm… I don’t want to post it here. It’s 5A though, north of D/FW. Our marching band isn’t the greatest, but our drumline tears it up.

I’ll just PM you.

sooooo everyone…i have a question, actually two.
