Yale 2015 SCEA Hopefuls

What about ECs? although that’s harder to define because someone can be a 10 in that they are a leader in a billion things and have won national/international competitions and everything, or you can be a 10 in that you save puppies and kittens from burning buildings and feed/clothe orphans in your spare time.

GPA/ClassRank: 9.5
Test Scores: 7.5
ECs: 7.5
Recs: 9
Essays: 9
–> Overall: 8.5

Hmmm…

GPA/Class Rank: 8
Scores: 9
ECs: 5, maybe 6
Recs: No idea. I’ll say 7.
Essays: 9.5. I was really, really proud of these.
Overall: ~8

(Assuming that 5 is around average for Yale applicants and that 10 is perfect…)

GPA/Class Rank: 10
Scores: 10
ECs: ~7-7.5
Recs: Haven’t seen them
Essays: Hard to say both because, as always, self-evaluation of writing is difficult and because it will vary depending on the tastes of the reader

^
Exactly. I just wanted to get a feel for how confident everyone was. :P

This is kind of fun, so I’ll give it a try:

GPA/Class Rank: 10
Test Scores: 9.5
EC’s: ehh… 5.5? 6?
Recs: Can’t say. I’m hoping for at least an 8 though.
Essays: Again, difficult to say, but I was proud of them and am a good writer: 9

I feel kind of confident. Only one other kid from our school has ever been accepted (not that many have applied) and I compare pretty favorably to her (both quiz bowl team captains :P). Can’t say anything for certain, but my hopes are that fantastic grades/test scores plus hopefully great essays will, in addition to geographic diversity, push me over the top. I have to think I’m one of the top 3 or 4 applicants from my state, and that’s what gives me hope. If I were in New York right now, I’d lose that confidence.

GPA/Class Rank: 10
Scores: 9.5
ECs: 8 or 9, many national-level awards
Recs: 7 for teacher/guidance recs (certainly not “copy and paste” recs but not incredible either) and 9 for supplementary rec (from research mentor)
Essays: 7 or 8. Like silverturtle said, it’s hard to judge my own writing. I personally think they’re decent but nothing spectacular.

Honestly though, as much as I would love an acceptance, I’m fully expecting to be deferred. :/

GPA/Class Rank: 10
Scores: 10
ECs: 8 (great, lots of leadership, well-rounded, but missing that “wow” factor)
Recs: 10 (didn’t read them, but this is based on how close I am to my teachers and GC, and how particular they are in terms of their writing)
Essays: I have really low self-esteem when it comes to writing, so I’m just going to say 6.

@silverturtle: how many SAT IIs did you end up taking?

looks awkwardly at location status

…THANKS. =PPPP

LOL. This sounds really superficial, but my best friend and I talk about this all the time! He applied ED to Columbia, though. I’m glad I’m not the only one.

What’s the difference between this and the stats comparison thread? Everything beyond GPA/Class Rank and Scores is subjective and everyone thinks their own ECs/Essays/Recs are good.

High five for being from an over-represented state!

How would you know if you’re from an over or under-represented state? What would you consider the cutoff for accepted applicants?

hmm lets see…

GPA/Class Rank: 10
Scores: 8-9
ECs: 8 (good, but like others, missing the “wow” factor)
Recs: 8-10 (I have no idea, but my teachers like me…)
Essays: 1 OR 10- I did something that will either get me accepted or rejected

Dude… you guys are comparing your apps… Stanford REAers are having massive sexual chat rooms for hours on end… Stanford FTW!

That sounds just awful.

^^Uhm…are you bragging about that?

Sexual chat rooms? Is it 2001?

^You’re thinking of “A Space Odyssey”. Chatrooms are soooo 1999.

Figures that Stanford checks a few people’s Facebooks, with all their so-called “Camaraderie”…
Haha jk :)
