Yale Parents thread

My D was there for an orientation program helping the University, it didn’t make sense for her to come home then go back just because the Dining Halls were closed. But with shopping starting on Wednesday you think they would start feeding them before that!

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/31/nyregion/yale-president-richard-levin-says-he-will-step-down.html</a></p>

Wow. Thoughts?

Re Levin

I have had alums tell me he has done a good job.

From some things I have seen and also things I have read in the YDN that the students complain about…I think there is room for fresh perspective

Has anyone heard of delays with the Post Office or shipments from Amazon? Trying to decided if my S will get books online or at the book store.

Thanks

^ another option to check for books is Yale Station Marketplace.

[YaleStation, the Yale University Portal](http://yalestation.yale.edu/)

Students sell their used books on there and usually at a decent price. The only caveat is sometimes the students overvalue the condition of their books. ;)

Your student will need to use their Yale ID to request any books that are available.

New Parents

Another thought re advisors etc…

A university is a huge bureaucratic organization and in the midst of navigating it all…I think the kids get overwhelmed.
It might be worth pointing out the resources on the website… there are links with charts and tabs with the info for specific issues re credits for advancement and when the skills areas etc have to be done…
I do think the advisors keep them on track with those skills areas…however if your kids appreciate digesting the info in the quiet of the room…they mind find those links helpful

Well something went wrong.

We ordered S’s textbooks via amazon, used the dual address method and they were shipped UPS. UPS delivered them yesterday to 206 Elm Street, which is the USPS and someone there signed for them. S went to pick them up there at the parcel window and the clerk said they were probably in a big pile that they pointed at and said that pile would be moved to 143 Elm and he would be able to pick it up there once he received an email.

So I guess he will be without textbooks all weekend… AAARGH…

Does anybody know the form number that he needs to be filled out at the Post Office to get them to put the UPS packages with his incoming USPS mail in the parcel room? I didn;t think that UPS would deliver them to the Post Office and would have delivered them to the first line on the dual address, which wasthe RC… Hope this is just a problem due to it being the start f the semester???

Pick up the form at the school Post office and fill it out there. Hope that helps.

I usually have stuff shipped to the Master’s Office in my son’s residential college. So, that’s another option… For my son’s residential college, they don’t seem to mind…

We also had shipping issues today. I ordered some textbooks from Amazon with free one day shipping (a special deal if you use your Discover Card). I put 143 Elm as the address because I figured that one day shipping was not coming by USPS. My D got an email that she had a package, but when she went to pick it up, the lady yelled at her for having the package delivered there and told her she should have addressed it to her residential college (she is a freshman on Old Campus). She did get the books, though.
So go figure.

I shipped a birthday treat to the Master’s Office. I called the RC and confirmed the address. It went to Elm St. instead – I think 129 or 124, not sure. I don’t understand why UPS would not deliver it to the actual address it was sent to.

With approx 1200 students per year and at least 4 yrs of UG ordering books…it is going to be complicated getting all of those handled.

Last year it took a couple of days for K1 to track down the package from Amazon because although it was dual addressed…UPS and USPS have a method. I know K1 checked in both the USPS and Masters office and then was sent to another parcel pickup…perhaps this Elm address you are speaking of…idk.

I think because of the size of the U and the packages that Elm may be a SOP ???

Many frocos tell the kids to ship things directly to the UPS store on Broadway (I think thats where it is).

I do know that the library is supposed to have a copy of each book being used so I think its possible to go there and read what needs to be read etc…

We still double address the items . I could see that whatever K1 ordered (does all book ordering independent of us) was all sent to the dual address system…and I could see that through tracking it had been signed for…so it was in the Yale system…and K1 was waiting for email confirmation to go get them

I mailed some birthday cookies to my daughter on Tuesday, priority mail, to her PO box. We were told they’d get there Thursday (we live only 60 miles away). Her birthday was Friday. She got up early today to get to the PO before noon when it closes, and it wasn’t there :(. And now it’s going to be Tuesday before she can get some rather stale cookies. I guess the beginning of term rush is just more than they can handle.

My son doesn’t even have his PO box yet. Every time he’s goes the line is so long he leaves.

If it’s any consolation, my daughter was at the post office this morning asking about a priority package that I sent to her P.O. Box on Tuesday. The representative told her that they were currently sorting through everything and that they would stay open a few hours late today. I hope everyone starts getting their mail soon!

Many thanks to Hooray Hooray for posting how to address mail and to Kdog for testing it and seconding it. Getting ready to order books from amazon. For those getting the 2 day delivery from amazon, are you finding that the deliveries are arriving via USPS at 206 Elm or via UPS at 147 Elm?

I second YoHoYoHo’s posting above, thanks to everyone for helping us new parents navigate through the first year. Great to have this forum to learn on and ease my concerns. My D is a freshman this year at Pierson RC. I think I am going to hold off for a week before sending her a care-package now.

A piece of advice from Freshman Parents:

If your student doesn’t buy books on campus,
let your students order their own books…and arrange where to have them shipped per the advice their FroCo gives them.

There are many sites to order from- Amazon and Abe being two we use often.

Your student will figure all of it out and where things should be shipped. All of that information was given to them in their freshman handbook and is in the info/tabs on the website.
The packages, if not sent USPS to their box will end up at a parcel pickup.
Their FroCos will help them if they don’t know where to find this info…though I suspect they already know…

It really is important for them to do these sorts of things: book ordering, choosing courses, meeting with advisors, laundry, handling roommate drama, etc independently.

Re Care packages: we sent one in the fall semester and two in the since k1 was gone Jan-May because of sport. Used zone boxes via USPS. Set up a USPS acct online and you can order the boxes to be delivered to you. When you ship them, you pay online and print the label. It is very convenient.

My son got his PO Box today. He signed a form for UPS delivery. So he sent me his address like this. Is this how I should put it on Amazon? Or should it say Box before the numbers or PO. Or the dual address? By the way, they told him it will be about a week before everything gets to normal and that they are hugely overwhelmed by deliveries.
