YaleGradandDad…The money being spent here is DS’s earnings from his summer job. We pay for tuition/room/board/books, and he is responsible for the year’s incidentals/spending money. Currently, at his request, we budget a weekly amount for him, since he realizes that he’s not good at budgeting himself. For the most part, this works, although last year we supplied additional funds during the periods when he was on campus and the dining halls were closed.

And, yes, we’ve told him that soon enough he will need to learn to do his own budgeting…

For the boxed lunch, just to set the record straight, this has to be requested in advance. It’s prepared at breakfast and the student picks up lunch on their way out.

The mealplan my S has is unlimited swipes. This allows him to grab a quick bite between class and rehearsal as otherwise his hypoglycemia would do him in, and still join the orchestra for their dinner after rehearsal.

Durfee’s swipes seem to be a popular and easy way to go and I think they can be charged on the Bursar’s bill so that mom and dad pay. We agreed to cover certain extra meals when circumstances really compelled it.

Our student kept the 3 meals a day plan…though spring term with EC doesn’t eat lunch nor dinner Thur, no meals Fri and none Saturday…
So at least 8 meals per week Feb-May go wasted.

And K1 complains that the athletes getting to dinner in the evenings often find limited food left/dining closing up when they arrive…

I do wish they has some options. The swipes at Durfees really are junk food now, as the real food/produce etc is expensive (compared to local retails–according to YDN)

Hi all. I’m looking for restaurant advice. We’re visiting next weekend, and want to take the kid out for a nice dinner on Friday night. We’ll have a car.

D says the same thing…that most of the dining halls are closed after practice. D noted that Stiles and Morse stay open late to accomodate the atheletes.

Do everything you can to switch sections, and come up with really good reasons as to why (better to offer schedule conflicts than to complain about the TA, in my experience both as a student and as a prof.) Switch immediately.

Are the dining halls likely to be open over the October break? I understand this break is new this year. I imagine a lot of students will stay on campus since they are far from home and won’t be able to make multiple trips in the span of a couple of months.

After attending Parents Weekend for the last 6 years, I won’t be able to attend this year. Hoping some of you will post a report here afterwards to help me feel less deprived!

Clarimom, I second your request to hear about others’ experiences during the Family Weekend. Last year, the freak Northeast weather kept us away, and this weekend my D is at a tournament in a different city.

Clarimom and CCParent, I would also like it hear about it too. I also didn’t go because we plan to see her for the fall break and can’t justify flying there twice in a month from California. By the way, my D is a freshman this year and I didn’t realize the fall break is new this year.

Just got back from Family Weekend–went to the concert band concert on Friday night, and the gala concert on Saturday night. Both were very good (we have one kid in the band and one in the Glee Club). The highlight was a performance of Artie Shaw’s Clarinet Concerto by the Yale Symphony Orchestra–the kid who played the solo was phenomenal–he got a well-deserved standing ovation–and he isn’t even a music major. The weather was nice, but we didn’t make it to the football game this time.

Thanks for your post, Hunt! Glad to hear about the concerts. (Just to clarify, according to my sources, the Artie Shaw performer is a double major in music and computer science.) Glad the weather was nice this year! If my memory serves me right, there was a major blizzard last year during Family Weekend.
