Yale Parents thread

I do have some concern that we will end up paying more for the off-campus arrangement than we would for on-campus housing. Unfortunately for my son, his current roommates were moving off-campus or into swing space. The residential college system makes it tough to live with your friends if you don’t all live in the same college hence his desire to move off campus. Fingers crossed that it all works out!

When is the earliest year that the kids can move into an apt? Jr and sr years? Do the kids usually like or dislike the swing space?

Freshman and sophomores are required to live on-campus, so the earliest kids can move off-campus is junior year.

My son lived in swing space for JE last year, and he liked it. It is in a building on Old Campus, so it’s nearby. It is slightly inconvenient, but he had no real problems. Most students have no desire to move off campus.

In you opinion, what is the best air travel option for New Haven? New Haven, Hartford or New York?

New York is the most dependable.

Well one of the advantages for K1 is that the other 3 are on the team as well.
K1s roommate has been great, however their paths are going different ways, and the roommate has a significant other and spends all of the time at the SOs apartment.

K1 doesn’t have lots of time for other things so the team is the big social outlet.
So being with 3 teammates can be a good thing.

Hope to get more info soon.

The Res colleges are so very nice. K1s rooms for both fresh and soph yr have been really nice…nothing compared to the cement block “barracks” with the hall baths for like 50 girls…

Air travel - we live in SE Michigan and my D would use either Delta, American or Spirit to LaGuardia OR US Air through Philadelphia directly into New Haven.

After landing in LaGuardia she would take the M-60 bus to catch the Metro North train out of the 125th & Lexington station into New Haven, which is the last stop OR she would take a bus to Grand Central and then take the Metro North train to New Haven.

US Air to New Haven was very convenient, once she arrived, but the connection in Philly sometimes caused problems. Also the flight from Philly to New Haven was usually a small “puddle jumper” type plane.

AAStudent: I’ve mentioned this before. If you’re travelling with a parent, booking airfare and car rental jointly on the airlines’ websites and going into Hartford can be very inexpensive combination.

If it’s the student alone, UMDad’s options are very good

I have to vote for Hartford. We can get non-stops on Jetblue and Southwest right into Bradley so we avoid any connection issues. Also, the trip on CT Limo is under an hour from Hartford to New Haven and runs $65.

Thanks for the info.

UMDAD, in your experience, how long does it take to travel from LaGuardia to Yale on average? Or what is the latest time we have to arrive at LaGuardia and how early do we have to leave Yale to catch a flight at LaGuardia? Is there a Limo service between LaGuardia and New Haven?

My favorite travel option with parents if money is not an issue is flying into HPN (White Plains). I have done that when using frequent flyer tickets. Public transportation from that airport is problematic if not renting a car but the car rental is much less expensive than from the NYC airports.

Hartford is the shortest travel time by airport limo to New Haven but is is significantly more costly than flying into LGA and taking the M60 bus as detailed above. My kid likes LGA and the M60 best but it is harder if you have heavy luggage and perhaps less safe if done late at night. I gave my kids money upfront for travel expenses and let them choose the options and pay the bills. They think the savings on the LGA/M60 option is worth the extra time.

Many have reported problems with connections flying into New Haven directly and it is hard to find someone on this forum enthusiastic about that option.

It’s difficult to make sweeping statements about air travel, because it depends on what airlines are available on the home end. I compare Hartford and JFK. JFK usually wins even though we have Southwest. Sometimes Southwest is just pricey. There are usually more options going to JFK.

My daughter lived off campus senior year. As I recall, it was less expensive for her than living on campus. She was about a block away from a residential college, near a Yale building. She did not stay on a dining plan. She moved off campus because a) she needed to be able to control her diet herself for health reasons and b) she did not want to live in Swing Space her senior year as her RC was being renovated. It worked out fine. I hope DS will stay on campus for four years though because it does seem safer.

I always check Hartford/Bradley and LGA, and figure in the cost of the ctlimo. Sometimes one wins, sometimes the other does. Our D. is uncomfortable with using public transport with several suitcases, which is why we go with ctlimo.

As for White Plains - as a family we’ve flown in/out and rented a car there twice. Both times we got lost leaving the airport looking for the Merritt Parkway (is that what it is called?), and we got lost once trying to get back to the airport. I wouldn’t want to do either one in the dark.

I see on the Yale Dining Website that they are going to be offering meals for $7 during the upcoming 2 week spring break. You sign up in advance for a certain number of prepaid meals, and they bill the Bursar account. I don’t think the Dec 19 payment deadline is correct. Dec. 19th was the deadline last time for meals used between January 7 - 12. This looks like a bad cut-and-paste update to their last offering. Just an FYI for those who will have students on campus March 9 - 23rd.

Winter Break Meals:
"As a service to those students who will be on campus during spring break, March 9th -23rd, 2013 Yale Dining is offering lunch or dinner for $7 per meal at Pierson dining hall (3/9 - 3/16) and Ezra Stiles and Morse dining halls (3/17 - 3/23). Students will be able to purchase from 2 to 16 meal swipes to use only during the 3/9 - 3/16 time period, and 2 - 14 meal swipes to use only during the 3/17 - 3/23 time period. Swipes are transferrable and may be used for guests, but unused swipes the week of March 9th will expire following dinner on March 16th and unused swipes for the week of March 17th will expire following dinner on March 23rd. You do not have to be a current meal plan holder to purchase the winter break plan, but you must enroll by the end of the day December 19th, 2012. "

aastudent,

Flying into Bradley, JFK, LaGuardia, Newark usually depends on what works best for your originating city. I think that a poster said that if you fly into Newark, there is a train that goes from Newark to New Haven. I do like another poster’s suggestion of flying into White Plains if you have parents with you who plan on renting a car.

We fly into JFK.
FYI, round trip prices from Yale to JFK are $95 for CT limo, $98 for QConn Shuttle, $108 for Go Shuttle, $134 for Red Dot. For QConn, they pick up and drop off at individual terminals, but for start of school, end of school, and thanksgiving, they pick up and drop off at Terminal 4 and you have to take the airport shuttle to/from terminal 4.

For some airlines–I know this to be true for United–you can book a flight to and from New Haven’s Union Station. You take the train from New Haven to Newark Airport, and then fly to wherever. The train connection is part of your ticket, and the cost of taking it to and from Newark doesn’t add much–if anything–to your overall ticket price. Compare this included train ticket to the add-on cost of CT Limo, and it’s an easy choice. Who wouldn’t prefer a train to a limo even for the same price?

As for White Plains airport, there are bus options that will get you to the Metro North Station in White Plains.

For my son living in the Midwest the cheapest overall price is flying to/from LGA (JFK is usually at least $50 more) and taking the bus to the train station and the Metro into New Haven. I believe the total train/bus cost is less than $25 round-trip. From the train station the free Yale shuttle gets him to campus.

How do you do this? If I go to the United web site and enter New Haven in the From section, it pulls up flights from the New Haven airport. The Amtrak ticket to Newark ranges from $34-$59 depending on the time of day one is traveling. I can’t imagine United ‘absorbs’ the cost of the ticket, but if you know a trick, fill us in!

For our student, I have compared

time of total travel (including layovers)
ground transportation costs
air costs

for BDL, LGA and JFK.

In the end, it was a wash…

I would love to know about the train/air tickets.
