Yale Parents thread

thanks riverrunner! I thought it had something to do with late night food!

Doesn’t it make more sense (economically) to get late night snacks from dining hall “takeout” and the free bread at that one coffee shop?

Hi, I’m new to this forum. Can someone tell me why every time I click “Yale University” i get logged out? Then if I log back in, it redirects me to the main page… This is the second account I’ve made, because of this problem.

Thanks for any help!

^^^Sorry, I haven’t heard of a problem like yours before. Post a thread on the Community & Forum Issues forum, Mods there should be able to help you out. They will likely ask to delete one of your memberships as you are not allowed multiples.

Hi, I saw earlier in this thread that there’s an Ikea nearby. Any other big chains - Target, etc? Thanks!

I’m looking through the Calendar for Opening Days, and I see that “proper attire should be worn” to the Freshman Assembly. Can any current students or parents give an idea of what “proper attire” constitutes?

For H it was khaki pants and a button-down shirt. I wore nice pants and top, D wore a skirt. In other words, no jeans, shorts, t-shirts, or flip-flops, or at least that’s how I interpreted it.

Thanks, Booklady. That’s what I was hoping to hear. No ties and jackets required. Good.

My son send the application to get his ID card through the mail. They told me later that it was too late and that he has to get it at school. Does anyone know where should he go to get his ID card?
Thank you

wjb, last year it was really hot. You might be doing a campus tour, finishing up moving tasks, etc. After spending the early morning assembling furniture and running errands, I needed to change clothes before the assembly. I wasn’t staying right near campus, so I left my nice clothes in my daughter’s closet the day before and changed there. Maybe this is “too much information” but I was a little surprised by the physical effort it took to get everything done, and then to make the transition to looking like a calm and collected Yale mom. I wasn’t the only one!

Thanks for the heads up riverrunner. I do recall how hectic the move in was for my daughter when she started college. I keep looking at all the activities planned for Friday and Saturday and wondering what we’ll actually get to.

Same here. I don’t think there’s any way that we (parents) can possibly do all the activities, while trying to get the rooms done. Do the students have to dress up for the assembly?

desiw, yes. Same instructions as for parents and other family members. I believe the college masters spell this out to them.

Agree with riverrunner, move in weekend is VERY hectic. We live in the Inland NW – so many things were shipped or purchased after we arrived. There were many trips to Ikea, Target, BBB, Staples, etc………buying things for D’s room and the common room. Note: just because 6 students share a common room doesn’t mean there will be six sets of parents aiding in furnishing and setting up the common room. Of course every shopping trip means multiple trips up to the dorm room. I think I was in Target so often, if I had walked in with a red shirt the employees would have mistaken me for one of their own. H and I felt it was important for D to attend all (or most) of the student activities, so we did a lot of the move in grunt work/unpacking/cleaning ourselves. We barely had time to change clothes and attend the Master’s meet-&-create social. H took a campus tour but we were just too busy for some of the other parents’ activities, plus we knew we would be back for Parents Weekend. Good Luck, take a few deep breathes………and ENJOY!

tutu – Appreciate your reminder that many of us will have a second opportunity to experience the campus during Parents’ Weekend.

Another question. I apologize if this has been answered upthread. I can’t seem to find it. For kids doing FOOT, does anyone know if we can pick up our kids’ room keys on Friday morning before the FOOT groups return to campus?

Hi wjb: I recall reading that parents could pick up keys from 9 a.m. on Friday the 28th.

“Yes” to key pickup according to this:

Yes you can. And then have the pleasure of watching your kids do the last huddle and chant with their FOOT groups. :)
