Yale Parents thread

Would that include rooms in Swing Space? Stiles freshmen will move from Old Campus to Swing for sophomore year - does anyone know if they will be allowed to store anything over the summer?

On the bathroom questions - any dorm that has bathrooms outside the suite will be cleaned every weekday, and have toilet paper and hand soap replaced by the cleaning staff.

For in-suite bathrooms, you do (as others have said) have to clean them yourself, but Yale provides free toilet paper, you just have to go to pick it up yourself.

Thanks svalbardlutefisk!

We have found a New Haven map on-line that might be helpful to you all, because it has stores labeled such as Ikea, Target, Walmart, Home Depot, and the large Connecticut Post Mall.

It is actually a map of the New Haven public bus system that we were looking at because dd will probably use the city bus to get errands accomplished once we, and rental car, are not around. I was pleasantly surprised to see it shows store locations so we can use it on move-in day even though we won’t be using the bus.

Go to cttransit.com then select New Haven route map. Looks like the O line (purple line on map) goes out Boston Post Road and to almost any store you might want, including Trader Joes!!!

in ten hours we will drive to the airport and slow down long enough to toss the DD out the door to catch her plane. then we’ll join the other oldsters on Parents Weekend in Oct. any thoughts?

But residences don’t open to upperclassmen until next Wednesday!?!?

Whoops, I realized she must be doing a long FOOT. Hope she has a great time!

We just dropped off S at the airport to head out for his 6 day FOOT trip. I keep telling myself, between tissues, that I will see him in a week, but the symbolic drop-off was hard. He is ready and excited, though, and I just hope that the hurricane in the Atlantic doesn’t mean rain for his entire trip!

Not sure about Parents weekend, since he has a whole week for Thanksgiving, and both H and I will be there for move-in. Flights from the midwest get only so cheap and are never a true bargain, so we’ll see… Good luck to everyone saying their farewells in the coming days. My heart goes out to you…

EngProfMom:

We can do you one better: We drove our DD up to the Northeast in July, together with all her stuff. Since then, she has attended one music festival, hung out on the cape with family, gone camping with friends, and just spent this last week camping on couches while preparing for placement exams and catching up with old friends. We were originally planning to not see her until Parent’s Weekend, but as it turns out I have other business to attend to in the area, so I will show up (late) on Move-In Day after all (hopefully, after she has gotten her stuff up 4 flights of stairs!)

S is flying out tonight for FOOT tomorrow. We will be doing the two-day drive from the midwest with his stuff next week and see him again on move-in day.

Hi, everybody. One week and counting for those of us attending Freshman Orientation Weekend with our Class of 2013 kids!

Can someone who’s been there before add a little clarification to the subject of parental “proper attire” and logistics for the big Freshman Assembly day Saturday?

I’ve read posts #266, 267, and 272 on p.18-19 already (“For H it was khaki pants and a button-down shirt. I wore nice pants and top, D wore a skirt.”). A few follow-up questions:

1) What percentage of dads wear blazers and/or ties, or has the more relaxed dress code these days really penetrated the Ivy walls? (Maybe other parents can identify and appreciate this being our first foray into the Ivy world, and trying to toe that fine line between being cluelessly underdressed or overdressed.) If I don’t need a blazer for anything next weekend, I’d rather travel lighter since we’re flying up with so much move-in luggage already for our DD.

2) Based on the schedule of events for Saturday, it looks everybody goes to the President’s Reception and then the Complimentary Lunch after the Freshman Assembly. Any parents stash casual clothes last year at their kids’ dorm rooms to change into for the afternoon to avoid going back to the hotel?

3) Given the lack of air conditioning in some of the older Yale buildings, what kind of temperature and humidity can we expect in late August there?

Thanks!

DS is away attending a special four day weekend event at Princeton Institute, so I am getting a preview of what lies ahead. (Have used up all kleenex already). We’ll drive up for move in, and have rented a larger vehicle to accommodate the common room furniture we’re bringing.

In terms of formal attire, people at Princeton (where we live) definitely still wear blazers, button down shirts, ties and/or suits to ceremonial occasions, but if you are coming from a distance, a tie in the pocket travels much more easily than a jacket and definitely adds sufficient formality to a button down shirt (especially in really hot weather).

When we drove through New Haven the other week, it was really hot. If it’s going to be like that for move in, I’d say a fan and cold drinks will be very important.

Whoops. Maybe I spoke too soon (and too flippantly) about separation (# 309). Just spent a half-hour fielding worried phone calls about logistics, p.o. box, move-in…from my far-off D!

Suddenly I’m really sorry she’s been gone since July…but wait - new call…
-now she’s downtown at the Marriott, has solved P.O. Box problem, has run into FOOT leader/old friend, is on her way to Old Campus to go find other FOOTies (I love that word - makes me think of toddler p.j.'s)…whew. All’s good for the moment. I hope move-in day will be anticlimactic.

memake, your post prompts me to say (and this may be obvious) that if you are a parent traveling to New Haven to help your child move in, and you have a car to run errands with, think about offering to take an extra kid to Target/IKEA, when you go. Yale students come from across the country or the sea and some are trying to do this all by themselves. “Target” may be a foreign concept, and physically lugging a plastic container across town, to put under the bed, may be impossible. It can be character-building to do this alone, but also frustrating and a little intimidating when they see other students with an abundance of help. It’s a great ice-breaker, too.

yup - i’m sure many of the parents who are in New Haven next Friday with a car will be generous with their time and car to help students in need. After all, it’s just good karma - one day it will be our own child who is in need of a ride, and we all hope they will find help when they need it!.

I can’t believe we are down to 1 week and counting…lately I cry when I see little kids - LOL! How did 18 yrs go so quickly? Anyway, a quick question about computer support/repair by Yale ITS. I apologize because this was probably covered before, but haven’t found it:
I remember reading on the Yale ITS site that if you purchase a new computer, say a Mac, and purchase the extended AppleCare warranty which is good for 3 yrs, then ITS will repair/service the computer and will come to your dorm room. But do you need to pre-register your computer with ITS or show proof of having the extended warranty? Thanks so much for all your help everyone. It has been quite calming chatting with all of you and good luck with the move in next week!

river, what a great suggestion!

desiw, I am confused about the warranty as well. I thought ITS was recommending we purchase a warranty which includes on site visits. However, applecare doesn’t have that option. I put this one on the back burner, but it would be good to get it taken care of now.

I have a question. I’ve been driving out with my Mom for a couple of days now but she has a workshop in NYC on move-in day so I’m going to be driving onto campus alone. Will there be a place for me to park while I unload my stuff? I imagine it’ll be pretty busy. What do I do? I’m in Vanderbilt (Branford) by the way.

riverrunner and memake, thanks for the suggestion for offering to drive a stray freshman to Ikea, Target, or whatever, if you have room. They will appreciate it! You will probably form part of their fond memories of Yale for years to come!

southeasttitan, when you pull up to the curb, a bunch of Branford upperclassmen will greet you and unload your car before you can turn off your engine. Bring the parking permit you got in your packet and put it on your dash. No one will give you a ticket on move in weekend, as long as you have the permit. Don’t worry about this. It’s chaos, but it’s friendly, helpful chaos. Once you are completely unloaded and done running errands, you can find parking in a nearby garage. They’re not cheap, but safe and within a few blocks of campus.
