@musicmerit, I wonder if it’s discomfort with the new format, or perhaps all the questions and concerns have been answered. I know that some of my questions (network access at Yale, fwiw) were easily answered with a quick Google of the topic.

JUST WAIT about 4 weeks, when the RD decisions come out and there is a whole new crop of new bulldog parents! Then the posts will pour in like a waterfall!

@donnaleighg, I’m not sure if I’m embarrassed or proud to have forgotten about RD. Our home has been so college acceptance stress free for a while that it slipped my mind. DS, GF, and nearly all of his friends were exceptionally lucky (and deserved it) in the early rounds, and the few exceptions are well situated for RD.

I helped DS get his BoA ATM card as recommended here, and am trying to figure out how to park his car in the driveway so that it doesn’t get in the way (file this under first-world problems). I guess I should call the insurance company in the fall to tell them he doesn’t have his car at school.

Does anyone happen to know if there’s a minimum mileage from home where the insurance rate is adjusted?

Our insurance company (state farm) was 60 miles as I recall. Even though according to google we are actually closer than that (I think 52, but then why does it always take 90+ minutes?) they gave us the discount.

Thanks. 100 miles via 95, more via other routes, so we should be good.

Along the lines of insurance, we received some excellent info on this thread regarding insurance for college students belongings. There are a couple of companies that provide policies, we went with CSI – College Student Insurance – and have been extremely happy. DD has had a couple of occasions to use the policy, which covers laptops, cell phones, etc. (including accidental damage), and we have found the company to be very responsive. The price is cheap ($130 per year) for the piece of mind!

I saw that recommendation for insurance, looked at the company and bookmarked the page. I didn’t read all 215 pages of this thread, but I did go back and found some helpful posts. I’m sure there are additional good suggestions starting on page 1, but …

There is probably an insurance thread in the parents forum. Lots of people get it. We did not and have not regretted that decision. Yet. We also stayed with the hometown bank. Very little need for cash when the home debit card can be used for almost everything. I am sure this thread will be busier come RD time. It is hard to believe that was almost a year ago!

I just had to make a brief comment on airport shuttles.
D has taken both CT Limo and Go Shuttle from campus to JFK and back again and says that Go Shuttle is much better. They make fewer stops so the travel time is less. From a parent perspective, the cost of the CT Limo and Go shuttle are the same. And Go Shuttle’s website/reservation on-line is so much easier than CT Limo. Just my 2 cents.

We are probably going to Parents’ Weekend this year as my daughter has to be on the East Coast in the fall. I was looking at hotel prices in New Haven and nearly had a heart attack! :). Just wondering what parking at Yale is like if we stay in a hotel in Milford and drive in.

Here is a link to Yale parking lots - there are quite a few - <a href=“Parking Options | It's Your Yale”>Parking Options | It's Your Yale. There are also city and private parking garages - see: http://nhparking.com/ There are aslo parking meters but some may have time limits that are inconveniently short. Here is a meter location and time limit map - http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/TRAFFICPARKING/pdfs/Meters31214.pdf

I think most of the on campus parking lots are free on weekends. I don’t remember having trouble finding parking or having to pay for it.

There are quite a few places to park–staying in Milford works quite well.

Thanks for the input. Milford it is!

Hey entomom - how about pinning this thread to the top for a while to accommodate the new, class of 2018, parents?

Hello Yale parents. Very excited my son was accepted for the class of 2018. However my heart is sinking because probably he won’t be able to attend as the cost is prohibitive for us:(( There’s no way we can pay $40K a year! I happened to have a decent year last year, but the year before I made $50K less. I’m the mom and breadwinner of the house, but my income is very volatile as I’m in sales and on a 100% commission not guaranteed salary. Columbia is giving him a better package. I wonder is any of you had you FA reviewed and how successful you were. Any input will be greatly appreciated

If Columbia is giving him a better package, you can contact Yale and ask if it will match. Be super polite. Say something along the lines of “Yale is his first choice and we’d really hate for him to have to choose Columbia because of $ but…” Sometimes it works.

^thank you. I’ll contact them next week. Wish us good luck:)

Hello parents of 2015 grads, just wanted to let you know I got the email from the Omni today for commencement weekend reservations. Three night minimum, non refundable deposit, all charged when the reservations are made…OUCH!! The cheapest room is $509 a night. I’m sure there are cheaper ways to do this, but with an elderly parent determined to attend we need the least amount of transportation/parking/walking headaches, etc. Anyway, I guess 14 months from now I’ll hardly remember paying for the rooms… @-) . Also, I can’t even believe graduation is on the radar screen already…where has the time gone?!

I’m a class of 2015 parent (haven’t gotten the email yet). I also have an elderly parent, but I was planning to stay out in Milford (last I checked the Hampton there charges about $150 a night that weekend). It seems like we can drop granddad off with me, and my husband can go park elsewhere and jog in. No way I’m going to pay that much!
