Yale Parents thread

^^It’s a chronic problem that waxes and wanes. No particular neighborhood or institution is a target. And it’s not only New Haven or Connecticut.

Thanks. Are they just loud and annoying, or do they actually threaten lives and damage property? It isn’t all that clear from the articles.

My freshman daughter is flying out of Tweed airport tomorrow. She told me she will be using a Taxi or Uber since
there is no shuttle service to Tweed A little bit concerned about her taking either one of those alone. Any other options to Tweed?
Thanks!

It’s one exit away from downtown NHV. She will be just fine. A taxi will take her 10 minutes depending on traffic heading over the Q bridge.

Fall break starts today!! Though I have seen my D a couple of times since school started on campus, this will be her first time home since August. After a short stop at UPENN to see friends tonight, she will be home tomorrow. She says all she wants to do is sleep in her own bed and watch copious amounts of television (of course she will also have studying to do). None of her friends will be here so she should stay relatively close to home.

DD is staying on campus. She will hop on the train with a bunch of friends to do a day trip to NYC. I probably won’t see her! Lol lucky you @Tperry1982‌. I’m envious!

Our daughter is coming tomorrow–and bringing 8 other students with her, all of whom will camp out at our house for two nights. A mixed blessing.

Better you than me @Hunt. I think that may happen at Thanksgiving though since she has suitemates and friends from Australia, Greece and Hawaii.

DW gave a ride to a friend of son’s, but she lives locally. DS hasn’t taken us up on offering food and shelter to geographically disadvantaged classmates, but to be honest, the thought of 8 showing up never crossed my mind! It sounds like a fair amount of work, but probably lots of fun also.

My son flew in last night and it was so nice to see him after 2 months:) We went shopping this morning and had lunch together, but the mom and son fun had to come to an end for him to go visit his dearest friends in our state university. He was so happy to sleep in his own bed and have his own bath…the things we take for granted

After a wonderful fall break, our freshman son headed back to school this afternoon. He landed at Bradley at 6:30 p.m., went to the Connecticut Limo stop, where we had made a reservation (with arrival time). So he calls them, and they say there won’t be a driver there for a minimum of two hours!! What in the world?! I’d heard Connecticut Limo was bad, but I didn’t think they would be this bad. Is there another service that’s more reliable from Bradley to Yale?? I’m so annoyed that he is stranded at the airport for two or more hours!!

There are other limo companies but not with scheduled service - GO Airport Service for example http://www.2theairport.com/</a>. Although waiting is the norm with CT Limo, two hours is unusual and will probably not happen again. My sophomore’s longest wait was about an hour so far.

Oh! I didn’t think GO had service from Bradley at all, so that’s great news! After last night’s experience, I was afraid we’d have to hire a private car whenever he flies into Bradley.

Shoot, GO doesn’t have a shuttle service from Bradley, only private car service, which is pretty expensive. Sure wish there was another alternative to CT Limo.

Yes, we found that CT Limo really went down in service in the last few years. We finally started flying our sons into New York LGA instead and using the GO shuttle from there–it ended up being cheaper than into Hartford and the limo service was much more reliable.

If he flies into LGA, the student can take an Uber to Grand Central (around $35) and then take the Metro North line to New Haven ($16). The train leaves roughly every half hour from Grand Central and takes around 90 minutes to get to New Haven. Very much stress free…

I was looking into having my son take Amtrak to Newark for a United flight to the West Coast. (I read about it on here - where you actually book the flight as coming from New Haven and the train portion is included.) What are the downsides? Is Amtrak’s unreliability a huge issue when it comes to catching the flight?

^^Although there were some issues with the tracks to NYC area, many of them occurred during bad storms etc. In a bad storm the highway will not necessarily be a better option.

Overall, your chances with Amtrak are no better or worse than the highway.

We take Amtrak back & forth to NYC all the time. Very few issues with delays.

Thanks. Sounds like a great option. Surprisingly it was the cheapest flight I found to California, and it includes the transportation to the airport. My son is so used to taking a train into the city, transferring to LIRR - maybe needing to go from one train station to another via the subway, and then transferring again to JFK. - this seems so simple. Amtrak on the West Coast, however, is notoriously unreliable.
