Yay! my son will be home Saturday night
Mwah! Mine will be at school for spring training!
My daughter is going to Spain with the Glee Club. I’m jealous.
@Hunt that’s awesome!!
Just an FYI - Yale still has available housing for commencement this May. Not a bad deal - $324 total for 2 people for 3 nights, Saturday through Monday. That beats the option of staying in a hotel 45 minutes away, or spending $1600 to stay in town. Instead, we can take the Train and Yale shutle and feet will do us fine!!!
We did this for both our sons’ graduations. Great deal, so very convenient, plus no worries about parking. We highly recommend!
Plus we might get to sleep in Hogwarts!
Absolutely! We loved it!
If they assign you to my daughter’s suite, it will be more like Hog Pen than Hogwarts.
Haha Hunt, you crack me up.
Hi me too! and i love the Glee Club ! in fact that’s what i asked for from my son for Christmas, their CDs!
Dear parents, yesterday I was on the phone with my sister trying to help her complete the CSS profile for my niece and I logged in into mine to walk her trough. Opps, I made a major mistake by omitting my son summer income. I did include his work study but left summer income as 0 like last year. What can I do to correct this? I was thinking of printing the profile and manually make the corrections and sent it to FA office. My son will be here until the 20th so I can send it personally with him.
Has anybody here used STATRAVEL to book flights for your kids specially when traveling abroad?
Just dropped my son at airport. He was not happy to go back to the cold or snow after enjoying summer temperatures…
I have a tax question for those of you with kids who are receiving a Yale grant. The tax form we received from Yale has the full cost of tuition on the 2014 part of the statement, but the Yale grant split between 2014 and 2015. We’re puzzled by this (His boarding school reported the full amount of his grant with the full amount of his tuition each fall).and wonder how to report the Our main concern is that our kid doesn’t get taxed on the scholarship money he receives in spring of his senior year (because there is no corresponding tuition payment to balance it out). The FA office cannot adivse me on this–and yes, I’m planning to call the IRS as soon as I can find a free half hour in my work day (What is up with IRS helpline hours being smack in the middle of the work day?!). In the meantime, I’m wondering how others have handled this on their taxes.
@classicalmama , calling the IRS is like asking a bear if he’s hungry. If you can afford boarding school, you can afford an accountant. This is a question for a professional, not the IRS “help” line.
Search for 1098-T. You will find a few threads addressing this question. Having trouble copying links on my kindle. But you will find that this form just says you received and paid money this school year. You can match it up the way you choose on your tax form. Just keep your own records. You can continue filing the way you have been. This form is informational and does not dictate how you file.
@rednecktiger: So many assumptions! Good accountant consulted, one who teaches tax classes, did not have a definitive answer, which is what happens when you live in a tiny, remote town where 99 percent of students who need financial aid go to state universities. As I mentioned, my son was at boarding school because of a grant–the difference between the reporting was what surprised me. We were going to call the help line because that was what Yale suggested and because we’ve actually gotten decent advice there before.
@musicmerit: Thanks. That was also what our accountant friend suggested, but he then looked it up and became a bit more hesitant when he realized that the form did go to the IRS. Off to do some CC searching–don’t know why I didn’t do that in the first place!
@classicalmama that’s a good question. Let us know once you find out
I used the ‘split’ expense-scholarship data in the 1098T
That means that I pay less tax now but more at the end of his studies.
