Yale Parents thread

Also slightly concerned about yield when I read that ~60 were admitted off the wait list…but then I saw that Harvard’s expecting to take ~60-70 off their wait list, so this year’s probably nearish last year’s record high yield level (it was over 70% last year if I remember correctly):
http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2015/05/strong-enrollment-for-class-of-2019/

…and MIT admitted 52, which seems high considering some years they admit zero: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/fall-2015-wait-list-decisions-will-be-sent-today

Anecdotal, but my impression is that more kids this year on CC are reporting multiple-Ivy admits, admits to all Ivies, multiple selective-school admits, etc. I personally have an issue with it (I have yet to conjure up a human who would be a “fit” at each and every Ivy), but perhaps last year’s publicity around the applicant who went 8 for 8 had an effect. For every applicant accepted to 10 schools, they will move the yield in the direction of 10% for 9 of the schools.

I can hope for a day when yield no longer factors into ratings, but I might as well hope for a day when the football team no longer matters to non-athlete applicants too

Ever decreasing admission rates scared a lot kids into applying to ever more schools, screwing up a lot of schools’ yield management. Consideration of fit comes into play only after one receives multiple offers.

I have to respectfully disagree. Decreasing admissions rates naturally will cause concerned applicants to apply to more schools. But, they can consider fit before applying, and applying to all of the Ivy schools is clearly disregarding fit. Why not one or two Ivies and similarly fitting selective non-Ivy schools.

DS was accepted SCEA to Yale. He was pressured (not by parents or GC) to apply to H, P, MIT etc., presumably so classmates could vicariously put a [borrowed] trophy on the mantle. He had no interest in doing that and enjoyed the rest of senior year, but there are probably many kids who decided differently, thus screwing up the whole process. People should apply to enough schools, in number and in different selectivity bands, that they won’t have a disastrous result. The trophy hunters gum up the works. I don’t think that GCs should cater to it, and IMHO, anyone applying to 8 Ivies should be accepted to none of them, regardless of stats.

I’m assuming that Yale’s yield will be similar to last year’s, or at least this is the case for Ivies that have released this information as of now (Harvard, Princeton, Penn).

Hi I was hoping for something from the trusty Yale Daily News - nothing yet but on earlier years

Just checking in here… spending night one of three in a Yale residence hall. How cool is that? DH and I each have a little room with a twin bed, towels, and window. Look out the window and see the grassy square covered with hundreds and hundreds of white chairs. Walk out your entrance and you are AT the commencement ceremonies. This is the best place to be for graduation activities!!! (A great and affordable option, if you don’t want to spend $350 a night at a hotel in New Haven when your kid graduates.)

Boola Bash 2015 update. Boola Bash could be fun if you like really loud music, beer, wine and very light snacks (macarons, sliced fruit and a few pastries). We had hoped to chat with some of our son’s classmates’ parents, but couldn’t conduct a conversation. Although the music was thumping, only very few people, less than 10% of those present, were dancing.

We met and talked to more parents during our half hour wandering around TD than we did at the Boola Bash. On the plus side, it was only $17.

Look like Saybrook or Branford.

Enjoy your D’s commencement.

Agreeing with @anxiousmom. Staying in the residence hall was a great experience, so very convenient, and saved a lot of money (also didn’t need to rent a car or pay parking!). We did this for both sons’ graduations and just loved it.

Are the residence halls available to parents of grad students, too?

Good question, SpiritManager–I don’t really know! Definitely worth checking!

JE is the best RC - except for the kids in the courtyard partying on at 2 am under my window! Gosh, I feel old!
Biden’s speech was very good, the kids were beaming and brilliant in their hats, and the sun was HOT!
@SpiritManager, I think you need an undergrad name to sign up for housing, but I’ll see if I can find out for you.

They were partying in TD as well! And our mattresses were pretty uncomfortable. But the price and location cannot be beat. Our group of 5 was housed on two floors in one entryway, and in each case our group had the private use of the hall bath.

YES, we are parents of Grad student, and we were able to stay in housing. FYI - 17,800 chairs on the lawn outside our window, per one of the guys removing them this afternoon! We are in Lawrance College. Perfect location. It’s been great, but I might have shown more of myself than is polite. (Remind me; why anyone would place a window right next to a toilet chest-high in a bathroom?)

Another upside to staying in the rez colleges… bathroom facilities with no waiting. Swipe your access card, go up a flight, get a drink of water, have a little rest, use the bathroom, descend the stairs and rejoin the other 17,000 people - some of whom are waiting in line to use the bathrooms…

blackberries, strawberries, whipped cream, lemon cookies with raspberry jam filling, mango punch - treats yesterday. Salmon, grilled veggies, chicken, pasta with cheese and pesto, most EXCELLENT food at the grad school ceremony today!

Yes, our lunch was awesome - good thing, too, because I’m sitting right now in the JE courtyard eating a sandwich for dinner after 2 hours of looking for a self-storage place. My precious offspring, whom a few hours ago I couldn’t see for the tears of pride and gratefulness in my eyes, informed me at 6:30 that not only was he not packed, but he might not be making the drive home with me. He and some friends were thinking of going somewhere to spend a few more days together…and could we talk about it later so he could enjoy his last night as a college student?

Ah, but it’s a beautiful evening; maybe I should find some way to enjoy my last night as the mom of a college student!

Classic, @scoutsmom!
