Yale Parents thread

@YoHoYoHo
As I mentioned earlier I was contemplating unlined Bean boots with wool socks as my son’s feet sweat easily. Did your daughter find the insulated boots to be too warm during class?

Thank you all for the advice! Any other cold weather tips are welcome! And which LL Bean boots are popular??

I guess this means that they’re popular: http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/brand-day-ll-beans-duck-boots-are-crazy-backorder-161851

I still wear a pair that I bought as a sophomore about 30 years ago!

Does anyone know (or remember) if the dining halls are open during the October break?

^^ Here’s a general rule of thumb: the dining halls are open whenever classes are in session, otherwise they are closed.

Related to ElMimino’s question, do students tend to stay around on campus or leave during recesses (Oct. recess, Nov. recess, spring recess)? Especially the Oct. recess . . . I’m not sure what to make of having a recess in Oct. and then another one a few weeks later in Nov. It looks like there’s only one recess in the spring though.

I did notice quite a few students wearing LL Bean boots during Bulldog Days this year . . .especially during the first day deluge.

Many students leave campus during the October break, Thanksgiving break, and Spring break, but other students, who cannot afford to travel home, or it doesn’t make logistic sense to travel, time wise, such as international students or students from California) stay on campus. However, even when the dorms are open over breaks, the dinning halls are usually closed. (Last year, there was an exception – it may have been over Thanksgiving break, but I cannot remember, one dining hall (Commons) was open for the entire campus.)

FWIW: Neither my son, or any of his friends, own one article of clothing from LL Bean. My son tends to favor Theory.

Last year, my son stayed on campus during the October break, and returned for Thanksgiving. In retrospect, we think that it’s too hard to return home for a short time. Maybe this year, we’ll go and visit him for Thanksgiving!

Thanks gibby and ElMimino - good to know that campus is not a ghost town over breaks even though many leave.

My D came home in October the first year, but stayed on campus last year. She took advantage of inexpensive activities offered by her RC. I don’t recall if the dining halls were open. One trip took her to NYC for the day. She is planning to stay again this year. She has never stayed for any of the other breaks.

Thanks musicmerit, that’s great that the residential colleges have some activities over the October break.

Does anyone have any recommendations on good places for breakfast/brunch near campus?

I like Atticus on Chapel St. for breakfast. Nice menu if you want to sit down and good coffee and pastries if you want to grab and go. Claire’s is a New Haven classic, although it’s never been my thing. Heirloom in the Study hotel is pricier and a place you’d go for a leisurely brunch. Blue State Coffee (locations on York St. and Wall St.) has a limited breakfast menu, but the coffee is good and it’s a quick, easy stop.

Thanks AdmissionsAddict, appreciate the thoughts.

@Community2605 - welcome to the Yale family. Pay no mine to the other “adults” on the thread, we are a fun bunch and have become fast friends through this community. I lived in Welch junior year when I was a freshman counselor. It had beautiful rooms (that was 80-81).

I have a D and we live only 5 hours away so we came to school with a SUV loaded. We still made numerous trips to Target, Walmart, and Ikea while there for the weekend - but then girls like things coordinated - at least mine did. I also ended up purchases little things like throw rugs, microwave ($45) and trash cans for the room since all of her suitemate travelled from far away and three were international. There’s a party atmosphere on Old Campus move in day and be prepared to get tired by the end of it all. But this is the culmination of all the hard work your baby has done so you will be bursting with pride the whole weekend. Welcome.

My kid did her own laundry last year. This year when the flyer came in the mail I asked did she want me to pay for her laundry this year. She looked at me like I was crazy and said NO. Guess its personal preference and you know your own kids.

Laundry is not free!! You don’t need coins though. It goes on their card. Guess to some kids that means free since they are probably not paying the bill!!

Everything that comes to my house with the Yale return address gets opened by me. If I waited for my child to do it, nothing would get paid or done. Of course, that is the relationship that we have so I’m not saying this is an option for everyone.

@Tperry1982 Thank you. That party atmosphere must be what I’m sort of expecting because I’m really looking forward to move-in day, even though we will all miss each other. My husband and I are trying to talk through our strategies for getting everything he will take from Indiana to New Haven, picking up our purchase from the Bed, Bath and Beyond in Milford, and making a few final purchases as needed. Hoping to keep the stress level low.
