Yale Parents thread

^^C’mon, JHS. It was pretty raunchy. Did you see the photo of the kid holding up a set of anal beads? I never heard of anal beads. Fortunately he wasn’t doing a demonstration.

Look, I recognize 50-something moms are not the target audience, so if I’m embarrassed by the raunchier elements of Sex Week, too bad for me. I have no problem with the whole thing unless, as wnp mentions upthread, prospective employers are reading the YDN and consider Sex Week a poor reflection on Yale students.

No, I didn’t see a photo of a kid holding up anal beads. I – and our mother, then only 40-something – learned about them from my brother when he was a student at SUNY Buffalo. My brother was supergood at sharing; he probably told HIS employer about them, too.

Good heavens. Is anyone else seeing ads for a website that sells digital vaporizers? Do you think our discussion of Sex Week at Yale has generated this?

Funny, wjb (I use Adblock Plus, so I don’t see any ads).

Just got off the phone with D, and mentioned this discussion to her. She said that this year Sex Week seems less “in your face” than it did two years ago, when it made national news. Perhaps she’s just a jaded senior, but she said it didn’t seem any more prominent than anything else going on on campus. She’s planning to go listen to Camille Paglia and Christopher Buckley at Master’s Teas this week.

D didn’t mention it and I didn’t ask; but I did read about it in YDN and the anal beads creeped me out. Aren’t those types of “aids” for the novelty-craving older set? It reminded me of why I didn’t let my underage kids watch R-rated movies: there are some things you just don’t need or want to know about in order to get through life just fine.

Fellow Parents…bet you are thinking I can’t let this go. But I had gotten “over” sex week without writing to Pres Levin or Dean Miller and then this…

Read the comments…as I post this there are 41 comments

Yale isn’t unique. They have the same sort of thing at Oberlin. In fact, it was going on during “Family Weekend.” (I almost wanted to attend a session or two myself!)

Seems like a lot of time wasted on a subject that virtually all humans figure out without a Yale education.

^^^^

Isn’t that the truth!

Hi everyone. I must admit I have read posts on and off since my D was a freshman and they have been such a big help! She is a sophomore now and I hope I can contribute something to others as well. Right now spring break is on her mind. . .she is off to Cambodia (last year it was Georgia [the country;)]). Are any of your children off to places a bit “off the beaten path”? Any concerns?

Hi and welcome, alohamom! I have a daughter in 2012 as well. Mine is off to Germany to meet a friend. Cambodia sounds very exotic. Will she go around the world your way so you can see her? My daughter somehow convinced me that Germany was closer and cheaper than coming home. :(

Oh, where was your daughter in Georgia. We are friends with a dear young woman who lives in Batumi. We have never been there, one of these days we will make the trip.

Well, RR, Germany is pretty darn close to New Haven!!

Did anyone see this in yesterday’s YDN? The Design at Yale club launched a helium-filled balloon containing a digital camera that captured high-resolution digital images from space showing the curvature of the Earth. Much cooler than Sex Week.

[Yale Daily News - Science project is sky-high](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/university-news/2010/03/01/science-project-sky-high/)

Yes I read about that - very cool. I read the YDN almost daily and am continually amazed at what is happening on campus.

I’m told the balloon rose 100,000 miles!

OK, so neither scientific inquiry nor visualizing structure is my best thing. 100,000 miles is clearly incorrect; it’s 40% of the way to the moon!

The balloon went pretty far…

Thanks rr. . . I wish I would see her this time around but that is not be. . .maybe I’ll see her flying overhead lol! Germany sounds wonderful, not sure about the “close” part, though!

WIP, my daughter did not get to Batumi, but lots of other places including Tbilisi
Tskheta Kakheti: Alaverdi, Gremi, Shua Mta, and Sighnaghi. I am not very familiar with these places, but she has some amazing pictures!

Exciting news today, D1 has been chosen to be a froco for next fall! Since she was a transfer, she’s excited about being able to get the Old Campus experience.

She also found out last week that she got the Bates fellowship to conduct research abroad this summer. It’s good to know that she’ll be doing something this summer, she applied for lots of grants and programs but has had to sit in limbo until decisions are made.

Congrats entomon! DS, a freshman, found out yesterday that he will be a FOOT leader next summer. He’s very excited. Perhaps he will go for froco in the future. Still hasn’t pinned down summer plans, but lots of irons in the fire as he is looking for something political and with midterm elections coming up there are many possibilities for him. Of course none of them will be near home…but we expected that!

Thanks and congrats to your S too! Sounds like an interesting summer for him, whichever opportunity comes through. They have so many places to go and things to do these days, guess it just makes it that much sweeter when they do come home.
