Yale Parents thread

Allcollegestorage is the name of the shortage and shipping company that will pick up the boxes from the RC and ship or store them and return then in the fall if you need to store more that the RCs allow.

I found them to be pricey. One year, DS shared a storage unit with another student which was cheaper. There was a parent who had a car to drive their stuff over. Can’t do that option without a car.

I received an email confirmation for graduation housing toady.

Ha, ha - got a message from my daughter’20, who is in Germany for a year . After seeing it on here, I asked her whether she completed her housing and advisory form. We communicate a lot, but really not about Yale . And since I am getting no communication from Yale , I feel like I am in the dark. Anyways, the message said " Yes mom, I did, Thank you for checking on this, but really you should not worry about it. I am the one responsible for doing it and if I miss something, it is going to be on me "
Gotta land that chopper

You get an alumni email address. You have to give up the Yale student one.

My son told me yesterday that he was having to breathe deeply after hearing how much he would have to pay to stare what wouldn’t fit in what he was allowed to store at Davenport.

I’m heading to campus tomorrow to move our son out. Unfortunately he has the very last exam slot tomorrow afternoon (and one this afternoon) so I’m fearing the worst in terms of how much has been packed. I told him his main job was to take care of all the furniture before we get there. So, any tips at all? Do we just look for street parking around old campus as close as we can get? I’m going to bring big empty suitcases and trash bags and a hand truck. We need to get out as quickly as we can - separate story.

@Musicmom2015 - Yup, drive around until you get a spot. I remember that it took a few laps but worked out. I assume you are driving home and not to an airport? My suggestion to save time is to tell your son to leave his hanging clothes on hangers and then use big trash bags as ‘garment bags’ for these hanging clothes. Then lay 'em flat over the other stuff in the car. This saves time on both ends, as it requires no packing/unpacking in and out of suitcases.

Honestly, trash bags are more flexible than suitcases for any soft items; just make sure they aren’t mistaken for actual trash and discarded.

Also, if your kid is anything like mine, bring a packet of cleaning wipes so that you can do a quick surface wipe of things before you put them into the car. The amount of dust on my son’s belongings horrifies me every time.

Don’t leave anything unattended (suitcases, bags) in the entryways – I have heard some first hand stories of things ‘walking away’ in the flurry of leaving.

Good luck!

Ok, thanks! I’m trying to bring all possibly needed supplies and make it as painless as possible. Can’t believe year 1 is over already!

@musicmom2015, and, based on our experience, the pace accelerates. I remember DS calculating in some cockamamie way that he was less than 1/8 done after his first semester, and now this is the actual halfway mark.

@Community2605, sometimes there are creative ways to store without paying a lot. If your son has friends who are renting off-campus for the year, he might be able to store stuff with them. One summer my daughter stayed in New Haven and was subletting and the entire basement was filled with stuff being stored by friends of the people who lived there. My son found someplace near campus that traded some storage space for a few hours of him volunteering, and there is the tried and true method of asking a friend who lives near campus to take a few things. When one of my kids went to college at an LAC near us, we often had all kinds of things in our house over the summer that belonged to his far-flung friends.

I am also heading up today. We have already brought most of my daughter’s stuff home but today we are using the pickup truck to play moving company for couches. It was the only way she could convince her male friends that they really wanted to help her bring hers down from the 4th floor. I shall be the couch shuttle today so if you happen to see a red pickup filled with couches, wave…

@Memmsmom, I’m heading up today also, in my pride and joy Tesla. My wife insists that the SUV is not big enough to fit DS, his stuff, his GF, and whatever stuff she hasn’t shipped or stored. So, if you see a guilty looking old man burning some of his kid’s belongings to hide the fact that his wife was right, wave, because that might be the last friendly wave he ever sees

Hello everyone. I thought this might be helpful for other 2020 students or parents looking into computers.

Yale recommended computer site: http://its.yale.edu/software-technology/buying-guide/recommended-computing-devices
Yale software guide: http://its.yale.edu/software-technology/buying-guide/buying-software
Yale Apple storefront: http://www.apple.com/us_edu_11027/shop
Yale software purchases: https://yale.onthehub.com/WebStore/Welcome.aspx (it looks like students can sign in through their netid and get some of the basics for free, like MS Office?)

I am assuming that any Mac purchased through the Yale storefront is acceptable for student use.

Any other computer/software tips from the experienced parents here? Thanks!

As some additional information, DS has a MacBook pro that’s around 4 years old. He is still happy with it (I asked, but full disclosure – he’s pathologically frugal). He’s a CS major and does compute intensive things (although he’s not a gamer). Even for CS majors, most of the compute intensive work is distributed to Yale servers.

He said that storage is never an issue; assignments are stored on the Yale Cloud. My personal recommendation is that you purchase solid state storage, but not the greatest capacity.

I’d also recommend, if budget constrained, to spend on memory rather than processor speed.
He doesn’t have a printer and says he wouldn’t use one.

The NCAA Track & Field Championships, will be held June 8-11. Yesterday, was move out day for all undergraduates. How is handled for athletes still competing?

Thank you, @IxnayBob. Great feedback from your son.

@trackcoach79 I don’t know about athletes, but my D is in a music group that will be performing in the graduation weekend concert. She has a room on Old Campus through that weekend.

@musicmerit Was your D in a RC, and then moved to Old Campus?

Yes. She had to get out of the RC at noon. And then was “homeless” till she moved into her Old Campus room a few hours later. We had already moved almost all of her stuff home. She is basically living out of a suitcase till the 24th.
