And yes, @tonymom, you’re right - from LGA you can take the M60 bus to 125th St. and pick up MetroNorth to New Haven a block away.
When I visited Yale with my daughter last year, we ate at Mory’s - a private Yale affiliated club. A good friend who is an alum (and a member) made the reservation. I was wondering if it is common for students to become members? The membership fee for current students is a one time $15 charge, with a $10 food credit.
There’s not a big reason to join Mory’s, although some students do. They’ll get the opportunity to go there with groups even if they don’t join. I urged my daughter to join (membership is cheap, as you note), but she never did.
I joined Morys for my son when he moved in (yes, Im a big spender). I had a lot of fond memories of the place but my son has never set foot in there since,
The A Capella groups perform there so we got a membership for my daughter who sings. We have been there twice. Its fun to go and be a part of it while watching them hold the big cup of either fries or drinks but to be honest the food is pricey and not very good considering the cost. They treat the kids great there though. We were told its cheaper for them to eat there then to pay an extra swipe on the meal plan so that is nice- she has never done that though. She has gone to see other friends perform.
Thanks, everyone. I was thinking it might be an easy place to go during move in weekend or Family weekend, but I know New Haven has many amazing restaurants.
There are many great NH restaurants, here’s a good way to check out your options:

Edited to add: I can vouch for nearly all of the top 58…delicious (+#60, Yorkside, which is only so-so).
@cttwenty15 are there any that are an absolute “must”? We are also looking to land in NH area a bit earlier than the Friday move in date and thought some sight seeing and Yale museums in order. Anything local we should check out?
@tonymom, I like your new avatar
@cttwenty15, thanks for the link.
@tonymom, fortunately there are many good choices, and it’ll come down to personal preferences, but no true “must.” I would resist joining the long tourist lines, which often wrap around the block, to have a slice of pizza at one of the two overly-hyped pizza places.
New annoying newbie Yale parent question…
How far out do you all book Thanksgiving flights? Feel like I should be doing it now but there are still many unknowns…
Also, sure kiddo will want to do Y/H game. Is Logan a “user” friendly airport…
I asked the same thing a few months ago, @tonymom, since I am a planner by nature. I was told that most but not all kids go to the game, and it often depends on their friend group. I was also told that transportation to the game is pretty organized, however coming back it is not quite as organized and it might be best to fly out of Logan. I lived in Boston for a few years and although it is not the best airport, it is relatively easy to get to it via public transportation (the T) or a taxi. Flights are plentiful and most major airlines fly in and out of Logan. I get the impression that it might be best to fly out on Sunday morning.
As far as timing, I bought my daughter a one way ticket to Hartford for her FOOT trip, and that’s it so far! I don’t even know if she will want to come home for fall break, so I’m holding off on that. I am coming to the conclusion that we will probably be lucky to get tickets with 6 weeks notice over the next few years!
I am going to wait until October to book the Thanksgiving tickets. I am thinking that she will go to the game and fly back from Boston on Sunday morning. I also heard that it is not uncommon for out of town kids to come back from Thanksgiving break on Saturday, perhaps to avoid the craziness of the Sunday after Thanksgiving travel.
Waiting till October might mean that many flights/times will be sold out @Faulkner1897
@Faulkner1897
Thanks for the details. I think a Sunday-Saturday is probably a good idea. Kiddo isn’t motivated to give me any details yet so we may be stuck waiting till the end of the summer to book flight. :-0
Good point. After thinking about it a bit more, I am going to go ahead and book a Boston ticket with frequent flyer miles and hope it all works out. I don’t think I will have much more data for a decision over the next 2 months so may as well go for it.
New Yale parent here with travel question
If the students fly home for Thanksgiving from Boston after the game, what do they do with their backpack, carryon bag, etc… during the game?
Thank you!
@Faulkner1897 - is your daughter doing a shorter or longer version of FOOT? Mine is doing the longer one, maybe they will meet each other
I have a very specific question about fridge/microwave need while at Yale. My older kid at another college had fridge/microwave combo for his freshman year (single) but he got rid of it right after that. My daughter will be at Sarah Lawrence (single) with a total of six girls for the suite. I know that they should coordinate with each other, but really, how much one needs a mini fridge or a microwave at Yale? It is not a huge expense, but the transportation or rental is bothersome. Any insight would be greatly appreciated
I know that watching Gilmore Girls was not a very insightful when it comes to life at Yale
@college4many - waiting for replies to your question! I am not sure if mine will want to go to the game, but if she does, this will be her problem as well…
Regarding booking flights, our personal experience is that giving the student the financial responsibility for booking flights focusses the mind. When it’s their own money that’s being spent the first booking may be made late but subsequent decisions and bookings are made much earlier…!
