Yale Parents thread

^^i read it online. Can’t remember if I get it by email or rather just follow it on FB but I usually read it all on computer.

Just read posts from T26E4 link to thread from two years ago, which notes how filthy some of the rooms can get. It makes me wonder if there are any vacuums kids can use or borrow?

The same questions come up year after year. I am grateful for the patient veterans on this thread.

Meanwhile, not a single thing has been packed and my daughter leaves early Saturday morning! She has been focusing on cleaning out her room and closet, so that’s good.

A vacuum isn’t really necessary; a broom and dustpan would be good though.

@Faulkner1897 my kid leaves tomorrow am… she has a lot packed but nowhere near ready to go. I think its her way of saying that she isn’t emotionally ready to leave me just yet. Just tell yourself that.

Procrastination beats fouling the nest.

This might be old hat – please excuse me if it’s a repeat. For all you first timers with kids going off to college – get that Amazon Prime account for them. Use the free shipping and Prime Video for yourself! Can’t beat it!

Amazon Prime and multi-viewer Netflx are used by us. I think Netflix is an additional $2 per month for up to 4 concurrent users. I have 3 kids’ addresses at school and our home address on Amazon free 2-day shipping; they make selecting where to ship very easy.

I recently went from a 3% rebate Amazon card to a 5% card.

@Faulkner1897 - Chances are that some kid will have a vacuum that yours can borrow if so inclined. Just don’t count on them being so inclined… ; )

I sent my kid with a Swiffer (low-tech kind that takes simple pads that can dust the floors and damp mop). Much lighter and easier to store than a vacuum. It was used, but rarely. VERY rarely. I actually used it upon move-in. You will find upon move-in that these old dorms have a lot of character but will not pass the white glove (or white sock) test. Breath deep and avert your eyes, and know that your kid is in for a grand time. Good luck!

@Memmsmom - My daughter is leaving tomorrow morning as well. She came home for three nights after a year abroad. Her unpacking turned into packing , but so far it looks like only the suitcase I am suppose to take with me next week is being packed. The rest is on the floor in her room or drying out in the sun. We are enjoying the few meals we can share, a few short hikes in the mountains. She went kayaking with dad last evening, swimming with mom this morning. And there are friends that need to be seen.

Thanks for the good input everyone. A swiffer vacuum sounds like a great solution.

One thing I have never seen anyone mention is a full length mirror. My dorm room had one on the closet door, and it was very useful for drying hair and putting on makeup, especially when bathroom space is at a premium and shared with many girls. Are there mirrors in the bedroom or is this a purchase I should plan on making?

@Faulkner1897
We registered with BBB to be picked up in Milford a very basic, door hanger mirror. Think it was about $20. I don’t think suites have them.

IIRC they even sell those no-frills full-length mirrors in the Yale bookstore at the beginning of the year, along with other “useful basics”.

Great to know!

Big packing day here. It’s starting to feel real. I’m excited for my daughter!

Sometimes you open the closet door and find a mirror already there attached to the door. I would wait just to check before picking up a mirror.

IKEA has very inexpensive, basic mirrors.

Daughter just left , this is real …

Yes, it is real. DD, is all packed up and flying in tomorrow. We, the “pack mules”, are driving up next week.

Packing is complete. I am amazed, we fit all of her bedding, clothes, shoes, and stuff into 5 duffels with room to spare (might be able to consolidate into 4) thanks to those Ziplock space saver vacuum bags.

The space saver vacuum bags, is allowing us to leave the SUV, and drive the car.

I have to say that my daughter and I have to have a serious talk about the pile in the den. 6 huge storage bins, two vacuum seal bags, three full laundry crate things, 4 boxes, 2 suitcases a refrigerator and a big garbage bag with her mattress pad rolled into it. And she isn’t helping pack the car because she is away with her singing group. Something is wrong with this picture.

@Memmsmom, your post makes me realize that everything that was just packed (and the things we will buy this weekend) must be dealt with next year by my daughter since we do not live within driving distance.

I am assuming she will box up all of her bedding and winter clothes/shoes, lamp, etc and keep them in CT over the summer, and she will probably use one of the services that @Tperry1982 and others mentioned to pick up and store her stuff then deliver at the end of the summer (Dorm Room Movers or allcollegestorage.com). I’m glad services like this exist!
